Two Different Wilsons Score Davenport Wins
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (June 8) - With a full Friday night program and two make-up features from May 25th, it was a busy night at the Davenport Speedway. When the dust settled on the evening, there were five first-time winners for the 2007 season and two of the drivers visiting victory lane, though not related, were named Wilson.

The evening started with the Street Stock make-up feature. Josh Wilson took the early lead from his pole position. Wilson held the lead until point leader Brad Tyler took over on lap seven. Tyler went on to take the win, his second straight victory. Wilson would hold on for second, with Rob Henry third, Kevin Schloemer fourth, and Tim Koehler rounded out the top five.

The make-up feature for the V-8 Modified class went much the same way. Pole sitter Marty Diercks took an early lead, before losing it to Matt Stein. Stein would then lose the lead to Modified points leader Thad Wilson. Wilson went on for the win with Stein second. Doug Crampton would finish third, Troy Emerick fourth and Mike Zemo Jr fifth.

In the regular weekly program, Mike Murphy Jr. posted his first IMCA Late Model win at Davenport this season. The race started with veteran Ron Gustaf taking the lead from the pole. Gustaf would hold off the field until lap 13, when Murphy took the point. Murphy would cruise to the win with Gustaf holding off Mark Preston to finish second. Joe Zrostlik and Nate Buesling rounded out the top five.

Late Model heats were won by Murphy, Rob Toland, and Matt Ryan. Terry Neal won the consi. The IMCA Late Model make-up feature from May 25th will be run June 15th.

The V-8 Modifieds had a difficult time getting their race started. There were six cautions before the race was called complete due to time constraints. Matt Stein, who started on the pole and held the advantage throughout the cautions, was credited with the win. Jim Willert was second with Bob Dominacki third, Kevin Blum fourth, and Brian Bushong fifth. Stein, Blum, and Milo Veloz won the heats. Tony VonDresky won the consi.

The second Wilson winner of the evening would come from the Street Stock main. Josh Wilson started on the outside pole position and managed to survive the wreckage to take his first win of the season at Davenport. Tim Koehler also escaped a couple of close calls to finish second, followed by Justin Conklin, Joe Beal and Henry Carson. The red flag came out early in the race, when Ron Doolittle rolled his car on the backstretch. Doolittle was not injured in the crash. Street Stock heats were won by Beal and Scott Pratt.

Craig Crawford led flag to flag for the win in the B-Mod main. Jake Waterman started two positions behind Crawford and caught the leader, but would settle for second. Kevin Dickey recorded a third place finish, with Dustin Begyn and Doug Burkhead completing the top five. Waterman, Dickey, and Crawford were heat winners.

Warren Ropp collected his third feature win of the season, in the INEX Legend car feature. Ropp started in the fourth row, but was leading by the end of lap two. Ropp would be challenged by Wisconsin ace Eric Barth, but Barth's ride soured late in the race. An exciting battle for second went to Craig Peekenschieder over Keith Meyer, Dave Blankenship, and Matt Montieth. Barth and Peekenschieder won the heats.

Ricky Kay picked up his first 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season. Kay and Steven Phillips were racing for the lead when mechanical problems would sideline Phillips and his car. Kay drove on to the win with Steve Boyle second, Chris Zrostlik third, Justin Parchert fourth, and Kevin Fix fifth.
