Ryan Steals Win at Davenport Dirt Classic
DAVENPORT, IA (Sept 7) – Matt Ryan pulled off an upset win at the Davenport Dirt
Classic, Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Ryan got inside race leader
Eric Gustaf in the final corner on the final lap, taking the lead, the victory,
and the $2000 top prize.
A total of 116 racecars were in the pits for the Davenport Dirt Classic. Rains
Friday morning and afternoon made for a heavy racetrack, which was both fast and
sometimes treacherous.
The victory was Ryan's second win of the year at the Davenport Speedway, where
he also finished second in points for the 2007 season.
Gustaf would finish a close second, with Kevin Blum third and Andy Nezworski
fourth. Stephan Kammerer came from a last row starting spot to round out the top
five. Nezworski, Blum, and Terry Neal won the late model heat races.
The V-8 Modified class had thirty-seven entries on hand to do battle on the
quarter-mile oval. Delhi, Iowa's Mark Schulte jumped out into the race lead, but
it wasn't long before defending Dirt Classic winner Jeff Morris and Davenport
Speedway track Champion Thad Wilson made their assault on the lead.
Wilson would get around both Schulte and Morris to take the lead and the win.
The victory was his eighth feature win at Davenport this year. Schulte would get
around Morris for second and was closing on Wilson when the checkers flew.
Morris would hang on for third, followed by Ryan Dolan and Marty Thompson.
Modified heat race wins went to Morris, Bruce Hanford, Bob Dominacki, and Rick
Hixson. Jason Masengarb and Ray Cox Jr. took the consi wins.
Greg Gill came from the seventh starting position to take the lead in the Street
Stock feature. Although Gill would be challenged several times by several
drivers, the Muscatine racer would hold on to take his only win of the year at
Davenport. Tony VonDresky started behind Gill and would finish in the runner-up
spot. Ron Doolittle would take third, with Toby Spicer fourth, and Cary Brown
fifth. Heat race wins went to VonDresky, Doolittle, and Rob Henry.
In the B-Mod feature, Jake Waterman got the lead away from Mark Winkel and went
on to take the win. Waterman, who was also the track champion at Davenport this
season, finished ahead of Todd Stickler in second and Ben Traver in third. Nick
Hixson and Winkel rounded out the top five.
Also racing in the program were the INEX Legend Cars with 17 racers entered.
When the 15 lap main ended, Joel Wyttenbach of Sauk City, Wisconsin, had gone
from worst to first. Wyttenbach started in the last row of the feature and took
the lead by passing both Eric Barth and Warren Ropp on the same lap. Barth would
follow Wyttenbach to the checkers, with Keith Meyer moving up to third, Ropp
taking fourth and Darrick Calhoun fifth.
Racing continues Saturday night (Sept. 8th) at the Jackson County Speedway for
the Maquoketa Dirt Classic. The next event at the Davenport Speedway will be the
4th Annual Fall Spooktacular, Saturday, September 29th.
