TUCSON, Ariz (Nov. 19) – For Brian Brown, Friday was an uphill battle from the pill draw.

Of the 34 winged drivers in the second preliminary night of the ASCS National Tour’s Western World Championships at USA Raceway, Brown drew the 10th highest number – starting him seventh in the first of four, eight-lap heat races.

Even more difficult was the competition, with veterans Ricky Logan and Danny Lasoski starting on the front row, Wayne Johnson fourth, Jason Johnson fifth and Tim Kaeding sixth.

“That’s the unfortunate thing with this ASCS deal is to get in a heat like that,” Brown said. “We made the most of what we had. But you’re not going to drive by guys like Danny, Jason, Wayne and Tim on a clean track like we had.”

The Grain Valley, Mo., driver finished fifth, which started him second in the 12-lap B Main.

After three consecutive cautions before one lap was completed, Brown was able to snag the lead on the fourth attempt at the start. He dominated all 12 laps and won to transfer to the feature, where he started 17th.

However, on the first turn of the opening lap, Brown lost five positions following a bonsai attempt by a driver starting further back. Lap by lap, Brown picked off cars and he moved into the top 15 by lap seven.

With three laps remaining, Brown climbed into the top 10 and he passed Lucas Wolfe for ninth place exiting turn four as the white flag was waved. Brown then reeled in Roger Crockett for eighth – the final position that was locked into Saturday’s $15,000-to-win finale – but came up a couple of car lengths short.

“The top was so dominant tonight,” said Brown, who finished ninth. “You basically had to wait for someone to make a mistake and pounce on them, and we did that to a few guys tonight.”

Brown is slated to start on the front row in one of two B Mains on Saturday. The top-three finishers in each B Main transfer to the prestigious feature, which Brown missed by one position last year in his first appearance.
