MITRISIN, LUNDY NAB PRELIM WINS AT 3RD ANNUAL MUSCO LIGHTING GREAT AMERICAN STOCK CAR CHALLENGE
By Tony Paris

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 13, 2006) - Racing action for the second straight night Tuesday was held at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Mike's Tire & Alignment Qualifying Night for the 3rd Annual Musco Lighting Great American Stock Car Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA Hobby Stocks. Tuesday's event saw the first six starting positions for the outside row of Wednesday's main events being decided with Tuesday's preliminary features.

The top six drivers from Monday night's features ran a Pole Dash which set the first six spots for the inside row of Wednesday's finale, and tomorrow night will be the final last chance races along with the main events.

The eight-lap Pole Dash in both the USRA Stock Cars and USRA Hobby Stocks were very exciting with all six drivers racing hard for the opportunity to sit on the front row. In the Hobby Stock Pole dash, USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national points leader Nathan Wood of Sigourney and Dustin Smith of Lake City battled for the top spot with Smith taking the win and securing the pole position for the big show on Wednesday. Smith will lead the field to the green tomorrow night for the $1,000 top prize. Brian Edel of Oskaloosa led all eight laps and took Stock Car Pole Dash to place himself on the pole for tomorrow night's 35-lap main event.

In Tuesday night's first feature, a field of 23 USRA Hobby Stocks had their sights set on the top six positions, with Ryan Lundy of Knoxville leading all 20 laps for the win, holding off Curt Hook of Ackley, who closed in on the final lap. Chase Mitrisin of Oskaloosa snagged third with Jeremy Swanson of Clarinda in fourth. The fifth spot went to Bobby Greene of Eddyville, who worked his way from the 18th starting spot.

The sixth and final transfer spot went to Mike Wolfe of Madison, Mo., who took the position after Jacob Murray of Hartford lost a right rear tire on the 18th lap, ending his run at the big show.

The final feature was the USRA Stock Car main event going 25 laps with 25 cars taking the green flag. Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa took the lead and built a sizeable lead before the caution flag flew for Josh Newell of Oskaloosa having trouble in turns 3-4. This closed the field up for the restart with Mitrisin trying to hold off the field for the final 11 laps with teammate T.J. Criss of Oskaloosa closing in for the top spot. The race came down to an exciting finish with Mitrisin and Criss swapping the lead, but Mitrisin was too strong and powered the No. 4B machine into victory lane for the first time in 2006.

Criss took second, with Tom Schmitt of Independence taking third after leading early on. Shay Curtin of Waukon was fourth and last night's seventh-place finisher, Justin Temeyer of Independence, took fifth after losing the final transfer spot last night to Pat Rachels of Knoxville by mere inches. The hard charger for the sixth and final transfer spot went to Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, who garnered the sixth and final transfer spot after starting in the 20th position.

After winning Monday night's preliminary feature to position himself near the front of the starting line-up for Wednesday night's $5,000-to-win race, Brad Pinkerton was looking good in his bid to win his third straight Musco Lighting Great American Stock Car Challenge title at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The New Sharon, Iowa, driver was set to start first in Tuesday night's Pole Dash to determine the first six starting spots for the inside row for Wednesday's USRA Stock Car main event.

Pinkerton rolled the dice on Tuesday, however, as he accepted the Musco Challenge and will start last in Wednesday's finale. If he can win from the back row in his No. 17p machine, Pinkerton will pocket an extra $5,000 bonus, bringing his total winnings to $10,000. Tuesday night's preliminary feature winner will also have the opportunity to accept the Musco Challenge and join Pinkerton at the rear of the pack when the green flag waves to start Wednesday night's finale.

In addition to Musco Lighting, sponsors of the Musco Challenge bonus include the Doug's 4-Wheelers, Pro-Line Buildings, Wayne Larson Racing, Harris Auto Racing, Quick Time Performance Products, RL Promotions and the Southern Iowa Fair.

The 3rd Annual Musco Lighting Great American Stock Car Challenge wraps up on Wednesday, June 14, featuring last chance races for Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, with line-ups determined by points accumulated during the first two nights, along with a Pole Dash for Tuesday night's top six finishers. A full program of Musco Lighting USRA Modifieds are also on Wednesday's card, which culminates with the $1,000-to-win, $400-to-start Hobby Stock main event and $5,000-to-win, $1,000-to-start Stock Car championship race.

Gates open 5 p.m., with hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30. Admission is $15 for adults while juniors (13-18) and seniors (62+) are $12. Children 12 and under get in for FREE, and pit passes are $25. There are no reserved seats for this event. All grandstand seats are general admission on a first-come, first-served basis.
