VANDERBEEK, MOFFITT REPEAT AT OSKALOOSA; PINKERTON, GIBSON GET
FIRST WINS OF 2007
By Tony Paris
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 2) - McDaniel Racing Enterprises Night for the USRA Casey's
General Stores Weekly Racing Series was held at the Southern Iowa Speedway
Wednesday with two repeat winners and two new faces for 2007 in victory lane.
In the USRA Stock Car main event, defending USRA Hobby Stock track champion Colt
Mather of Webster looked to have his first win at the Southern Iowa Speedway in
the books before mechanical problems ended his night late in the race. Kyle
Harwood of Oskaloosa and Jared Miller of W. Des Moines brought out the red flag
when Miller's car barrel-rolled in turns 3-4 but both drivers were able to walk
away unhurt. Zack VanderBeek worked his way from the 10th starting position to
take his second straight win at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster with
Washington's Matt Greiner taking second after leading the first three laps.
Nathan Wood of Keswick and A.J. Johnson of Oskaloosa -- both rookies in the
class -- took the third and fourth positions.
In the USRA B-Mod division, Brett Moffitt of Grimes led all 10 laps to score his
second straight win at Osky. Andrew Schroeder of Keswick and Ronnie Pumphrey of
Altoona battled for the runner-up spot with Schroeder taking second and Pumphrey
taking the third spot.
In the USRA Hobby Stock feature, Jason McDaniel of Eldon and Bill Gibson of
Knoxville battled for the lead with the two drivers exchanging it six different
times. McDaniel ended his night with five laps remaining with mechanical
problems while Gibson garnered the win with Mike Shelton of Ottumwa in second,
followed by Rick Landgrebe of Sigourney in third and Shannon Sherwood of Rose
Hill in fourth.
The final feature of the night was the 20-lap MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified main
event with female driver Allison Quick of Redding taking the lead and showing
the guys how it's done for the first six laps before losing the lead to Ron Ver
Beek of Oskaloosa. But Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon snagged the lead on lap 8
and sped away to take his first win of the 2007 season. Ver Beek took second
with last week's winner, Zack VanderBeek, working his way from 10th to finish
third. Scott Dickey of Packwood made the pass for fourth on Quick on the last
lap with Quick taking fifth.
Next Wednesday will be Fan Appreciation Night presented by Wal-Mart, Dou's Four
Wheelers and the Southern Iowa Fairboard. All grandstand seats are just $5 for
everybody 12 and older. As always, kids 11 and under are admitted FREE of charge
with an accompanying adult. This will be the third night of action for the USRA
