Four new winners emerge at Southern Iowa Speedway

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 6) – Four new faces visited victory lane Wednesday night as the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series returned to the spotlight at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Dustin Griffiths of Ottumwa came from the fourth spot to pick up his first feature win of the 2011 racing season by holding off points leader Kris Walker of Oskaloosa.

Kellogg’s Calvin Dhondt finished third ahead of last week’s winner, Craig Brown of Eldon, and Steve Allen of Oskaloosa, who dropped back to second in the standings just five points behind Walker.

Looking for his fourth victory in a row Wednesday, Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter started tenth in the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod main event, but could muster only a third-place finish as Andrew Schroeder of Keswick took the checkered flag first to end the youngster’s streak at three wins.

Polesitter Leroy Groenendyk of Oskaloosa held on for a third-place showing while Bill Gibson of Knoxville was fourth and Carter VanDenBerg of Oskaloosa fifth after starting 18th.

A tight points race in the division has shaped up with just six points separating the top four in the standings. Gibson leads the charge by just one point over Carter while VanDenBerg is just four points behind the leader and Schroeder just six markers from the top.

Another new face graced the winners circle in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars as Oskaloosa’s Corey Stout took home the trophy. Rick Gustin led most of the race before being sidelined by mechanical problems, and then Stout withstood a late-race maneuver by defending track champion Nathan Wood of Keswick for the win.

Steve Jackson of Polk City finished second as he fended off a late challenge from 13th-starting Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa. Wood rebounded for fourth and Rick Todd of Des Moines came from 12th on the grid to grab the fifth spot.

Shane Weller’s sixth-place finish allowed Wood to close the gap in the points standings, with just a nine-point separation between the two going into next week’s 15th Annual Musco Lighting Great American Stock Car Shootout.

In the Musco USRA Modified main event, former Modified and Stock Car track champion Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon checked out to score his first win of the year at the Mahaska County Monster.

Oskaloosa’s Ron Ver Beek and Steven Blattler started and finished second and third, respectively, while Ryan Dolan of Lisbon was fourth and Ryan Schaffer of Corning rounded out the top 5 finishers.

With Scott Dickey unable to take the green flag in the nightcap, Blattler narrowed the margin between the points leader and himself to a mere nine points, while Ver Beek is now just 28 points out of the top spot.

Next Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12, the Southern Iowa Speedway will host the 15th Annual Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout with the region’s fastest and most talented Modified, Stock Car, B-Mod and Hobby Stock drivers trekking to the Osky half-mile oval in search of this year’s title and big cash payouts.

Fans and drivers alike will get a complete show each day with a full slate of heat races, last chance qualifiers and main events in all four classes.

Monday’s will be regular USRA Modified rules while Tuesday will be under the USRA’s “alternative” Modified rules package. Except for drivers utilizing the CT525 crate engine, the alternative rules stipulate that only flat tappet 23-degree steel-headed engines are permitted (no raised runner heads and no rollers) and spoilers will not be allowed.

Hobby Stocks will pay $400 to win Monday and $600 to win Tuesday. B-Mods will pay $500 to win Monday and $1,000 to win Tuesday. Stock Cars will pay $700 to win Monday and $1,500 to win Tuesday. Modifieds will pay $700 to win Monday and $1,000 to win Tuesday for the “alternative” rules competitors.

The event is sanctioned by the United States Racing Association and will award national points both days in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series. The track will award 100 track points to each driver each day, except for the Modifieds on Tuesday.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds).
