Van Genderen, Hare, VanderBeek, Griffiths take opening night checkers at 15th Annual Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 11) – The 15th Annual Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout kicked off the first of two nights Monday with four classes in action and the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, including the Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods.

Mike Van Genderen of Newton finished a close runner-up in last year’s final Iron Man Challenge points, but finished first in Monday night’s main event for the full-fendered Stock Cars to pick up the $700 first-place prize as he held off Marshalltown’s Rick Gustin for the victory.

The caution flag waved at the start of the main event, but the rest of the 25-lap contest went green to checkered without incident.

Justin Temeyer of Independence bested defending Iron Man titleist Nathan Wood of Sigourney for the third spot to inch closer to Wood in this year’s points battle while 2009 USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car National Champion Tory Reicks of Waucoma finished fifth after starting in the tenth spot.

Wood remains the points leader by 16 (583 to 567) over Temeyer, with Steve Jackson sitting 70 markers out of first place with 513. Jeff Joldersma is fourth (462) followed by Chris Ulrich (459).

Defending USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod National Champion Brandon Hare of Elma took another step toward back-to-back titles with his second Iron Man Challenge feature win of the season and pocketed the $500 winner’s share of the purse.

Unlike two months ago when he inherited the win after the apparent winner was disqualified during post-race technical inspections, Hare had them covered Monday night at the Mahaska County Monster.

However, Hare had to withstand a last-lap challenge from current track points leader Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa for the win while Carter came up short of winning his fourth feature in five nights as he settled for the runner-up paycheck.

Oskaloosa’s Carter VanDenBerg wound up third, Andrew Schroeder of Keswick came from 17 on the 24-car starting grid to take the fourth spot and Matt Lettow of Roland rounded out the top 5 at the finish line.

With his sixth top-5 finish in six events, Lettow solidified his spot atop the Iron Man Challenge points for the B-Mods when current points runner-up Brian Schrage failed to qualify for Monday’s “A” Main.

Lettow’s advantage is now 161 points (543 to 381) over Schrage, followed by Brandon Leeman (373), Hare (361) and Parker Hale (354).

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Ottumwa’s Dustin Griffiths put on a show as he raced from the ninth starting spot to win the 15-lap main event.

Nick Ulin of Agency started and finished second with Craig Brown of Eldon in third, Chris Hovden of Cresco fourth and Todd Reitzler of Grinnell taking the fifth spot.

Zack VanderBeek of nearby New Sharon scored his second straight win at Osky in the Musco USRA Modifieds as he dominated the 20-lap nightcap.

Colt Mather of Webster ended his string of three wins in three starts with a runner-up finish, with track points leader Scott Dickey of Packwood grabbing the third spot, Josh Truman of Indianola fourth and defending track champion Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa completing the top 5.

Fans and drivers alike will get a complete show each day with a full slate of events on Tuesday night with the Iron Man Challenge for both USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods back in action with USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA “Alternative” Modifieds racing for the first time on the Osky half-mile.

Hobby Stocks will be racing for $600 to win, B-Mods and Modifieds battle for $1,000 to win and the Stock Car feature winner will earn $1,500.

The event is sanctioned by the United States Racing Association and will award national points both days in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series. Licensed USRA drivers will be awarded 100 track points each day, except for the Modifieds on Tuesday.

Pits open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and racing starts at 7:30 both days.

RULES & PROCEDURES: There is no entry fee for any class. Complete show with draw/redraw format. Draw for heat race starting spot ends 15 minutes before hot laps.
