Donlan captures thrilling Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout finale at Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 12) – The 15th Annual Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout wrapped up the second night of action Tuesday with four classes tackling the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, including the Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods.

The event concluded with a Stock Car main event that kept the fans on their feet and more than lived up to its name with the front pack of cars racing two- and three-wide throughout most of the race that featured six lead changes among four drivers.

Webster City’s Todd Staley grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag with outside front row starter Justin Temeyer of Decorah glued to his rear bumper.

With drivers swapping positions from the front of the field to the back, Temeyer pulled alongside Staley each lap until he finally made the pass for the lead with three laps in the books.

Staley didn’t go away, however, and wrestled the top spot back from Temeyer on lap 10 but Temeyer again found a way to get back around the USRA captain as the 30-lap contest reached the halfway point.

Meanwhile, several other drivers were searching for their time in the spotlight as Shay Curtin of Waukon, Friday night’s winner Mike Van Genderen of Newton, Nathan Wood of Sigourney and Decorah’s Kevin Donlan traded lines and positions with each passing lap.

As the pack of full-fendered machines came to the flagstand to complete lap 20, Curtin blasted into the lead in a three-wide drag race with Temeyer and Staley.

On lap 24, Temeyer regained control of the race for the third time as he left Curtin to fight for second with Staley and Donlan.

This time Temeyer’s reign was short-lived as Donlan scooted by to take the lead one lap later.

Donlan, who also won the Iron Man Challenge event last month at the Deer Creek Speedway, fended off the challenges of Temeyer and Curtin for the final five orbits and crossed the finish line first to pocket the $1,500 winner’s share of the prize money.

After starting 19 in the 24-car field, Jeff Joldersma of McClelland powered his way to a fourth-place finish at the end of the 30-lapper while Van Genderen held on for fifth. Wood, Staley, Ullrich, Steve Jackson and Corey Stout rounded out the top 10.

Wood continues to lead the Stock Car points in defense of his Iron Man Challenge title from 2010, but his advantage is now a mere two points (664 to 662) over Temeyer with eight events completed. Jackson is third with 587 markers, followed by Joldersma (549), Ulrich (535), Staley (459), Van Genderen (432), Ryan Leeman (431), 2009 USRA Stock Car National Champion Tory Reicks (374) and Kyle Falck (314).

Cayden Carter has been nearly unstoppable in B-Mod competition this season at the Mahaska County Monster, and Tuesday night the teenager from Oskaloosa was, in fact, unstoppable as he claimed the victory and the $1,000 top prize.

A late-race caution set up a green-white-checkered finish, but Carter was up to the task and sailed away to record his fourth win of the season at the Southern Iowa Speedway.

Keswick’s Andrew Schroeder came from the eighth starting spot but had to settle for the runner-up finish behind Carter for the second time in three weeks.

Monday night’s winner and defending USRA B-Mod National Champion Brandon Hare of Elma claimed the third spot while Iron Man Challenge points leader Matt Lettow of Roland finished fourth in recording his seventh top-5 finish in seven shows.

Jeremy Embrey of Granger was fifth, young Jenae Gustin of Marshalltown nailed down her second top-10 results of the two days with a sixth-place finish, Curtis VanDerWal of Oskaloosa was seventh, Jake Timm of Winona, Minn., was eighth, and 21st-starting John VanDenBerg bested Carter VanDenBerg for the ninth spot.

Lettow continues atop the rankings with 630 points, followed by Hare (452), Brian Schrage (434), Brandon Leeman (433), Carter (425), Parker Hale (404), Jared Timmerman (400), Carter VanDenBerg (369), Bob Sutherland (353) and Josh Bonnstetter (345).

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Dustin Griffiths of Oskaloosa completed the sweep of the two-day event with his second win in the last 24 hours, holding off Eldon’s Craig Brown for the $600 victor’s paycheck.

Former track champion Jason McDaniel of Eldon had a third-place showing, Chris Hovden of Cresco finished fourth and Todd Reitzler of Grinnell rounded out the top 5.

USRA RHS Modifieds had a twist with the class utilizing the “alternative” rules package, but it was local veteran Ron Ver Beek putting a familiar face in victory lane and pocketing a cool $1,000 after a dominating performance in the main event.

Dan Fetters of Montour took runner-up honors, with Mike Van Genderen pulling double-duty and finishing third. Nick Deal of Walnut was fourth and Altoona’s Greg Cox captured the fifth position.

The party doesn’t stop at Osky as the roar of engines will fill the air once again in just six days with the running of the 10th Annual Spring Challenge presented by KBOE Radio featuring the Modifieds of the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy.

In addition to the mud-slinging masters of Modified racing, the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods return for yet another Iron Man Challenge event with USRA Hobby Stocks also on the card.

Pits open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and racing starts at 7:30.

Tickets are $17 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and children ages 5 and under always get in for free. Pit passes are $30. Fans can pick up coupons good for $2 off adult grandstand admission at all three Casey’s General Stores locations in Oskaloosa on the day of the race.

American USRA Weekly Racing Series national and track points will be awarded for Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks only.
