Aikey Takes Big Bucks Home From Quincy
by: Jack Walbring

QUINCY, IL (July 2, 2006) - Jeff Aikey took home the $3000 winners check from the Independence Holiday Special for the Budweiser IMCA Late Models Sunday night at Quincy Raceways but it was not an easy thing to accomplish for the Waterloo, Ia. hot shoe. Rob Toland grabbed the lead on the first lap of the fifty lap main event and looked to be the man to beat as the field was brought to a screeching halt on the third lap as the caution then the red flag flew to clean up the destroyed car of Lonnie Bailey on the backstretch. Bailey and Thad Trump made wheel to wheel contact coming off turn two with Bailey shooting directly into the backstretch guard rail, Bailey was unhurt but his car was totally destroyed. Toland maintained the lead on the restart followed by Mark Burgtorf in second. Burgtorf shadowed Toland until lap sixteen when he slipped by at the flag stand for the lead. Toland rallied on the next circuit to get the top spot back but it was Burgtorf putting the pressure on Toland as the two battled side by side through lapped traffic until Jeff Aikey made his presence known on lap thirty by jumping into the lead as all three cars battled through lapped traffic. Aikey then held onto a thin lead over the next twenty laps with Toland and Burgtorf both putting on a show for the second spot and keeping the pressure on Aikey. Burgtorf went deep on the high side of turn four after the white flag and jumped the cushion giving second to Toland and also letting Darrel DeFrance by for third. Burgtorf settled for fourth with Terry Neal in fifth. Burgtorf, Sam Halstead, Bailey and Neal were the heat race winners over the thirty six car field with Colby Springsteen and Tom Darbyshire taking the wins in the twin B-Mains. Burgtorf also scored the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.

The Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature event found Danny Lake in the winners circle after a winning a great battle with first Henry DeLonjay and then David Wietholder. DeLonjay and Lake battled for the lead over the first fifteen laps of the main event, but Lake got the lead for good when DeLonjay slammed into the cushion and slid back into the field. Wietholder put the pressure on Lake until Robbie Reed slipped by for the second spot late in the event. The checkered flag fell on lap twenty five, with Lake getting his first win of the season. Reed settled for second followed by Wietholder in third, Josh Foster in fourth and DeLonjay in fifth. DeLonjay, Wietholder and Dennis Laveine were the heat race winners while Jeff Waterman claimed the win in the B-Main. Robbie Reed scored the checkered flag in the P&S Auto and Truck Collision Repair Trophy Dash. Darin Thye took home the $500 first place points win in the three track points challenge between Quincy, Lee County Speedway and 34 Raceway.

Steve Carlin was the Bomber feature winner but he had to slip past Bruce Hatfield on the white flag lap to get the win, his second in two weeks. Hatfield settled for second with Jarrod Richie in third, Todd Reichert in fourth and Adam Birck in fifth. Hatfield, Richie and Larry Powell were the heat race winners.

Steven DeLonjay claimed both the heat race and feature wins in the Hornet division. James Leffew, Sarah Woodhurst, Joel Kerr and Bill Winkle rounded out the top five spots in the Hornet feature event.

This next Sunday, July 9 will be Scout Night at the Races with all Scouts in uniform getting into the races for free.
