IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Opens at Quincy Raceways
with a Bang!
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (April 15, 2007) - The pits at Quincy Raceways was crowded with over
one hundred and five race cars as the first special event of the season took
place with the opening of the 2007 IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series sponsored
by Triple R Performance Engines. Forty Eight of the Deery Brothers Late Models
showed up to do battle on the quarter mile bullring at Quincy after having the
first two events at Webster City and Burlington, Ia. weathered out.
The forty lap main event was a real battle until the checkered flag fell with
Denny Woodworth and Brian Harris putting on a super show over the first thirteen
circuits. Woodowrth would lead the first five laps with Harris gaining the
advantage on the next two. Woodworth battled back into the lead on lap eight and
held Harris at bay until Boone McLaughlin slipped by Harris for second on the
fourteenth lap. McLaughlin then put the pressure on for the top spot finally
gaining the advantage for first on a lap twenty one restart. Woodworth let Mark
Burgtorf by for second on the twenty third lap but stayed in contact with the
front two cars. Burgtorf challenged Boone at every opportunity until the thirty
sixth lap when he gained the advantage coming off turn four to take a small
lead. The yellow flag was then displayed twice on lap thirty seven, first for a
spinning Darrel DeFrance and a second time for sheet metal on the track surface.
When the green flag reappeared, McLaughlin pulled along side of Burgtorf coming
off turn four when contact between the two occurred. Burgtorf managed to pull
back into the lead on the next turn and held McLaughlin at bay until the checker
flag fell on the fortieth lap. Burgtorf crossed the finish line with less than a
car length advantage with his left front tire nearly flat. McLaughlin settled
for second followed by Woodworth in third, Rob Toland in fourth and Terry
Schlipman in fifth. The winners of the five heat races were Mark Preston, Johnny
Johnson, Rob Toland, Burgtorf and Woodworth. Tom Darbyshire and Kevin Tomlinson
took the wins in the B-Mains while Brian Harris claimed the checkered flag in
the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.
Michael Long says that he will not compete at Quincy Raceways this season on a
weekly basis but after winning the first two Miller Lite Modified feature events
maybe he should reconsider. Long battle through the caution riddled event by
leading the last eight laps of the event that only had time for ten of the
scheduled twenty five laps. Long held off a fierce challenge from David Holder
take grab the checkered flag. Holder settled for second followed by Ryan Meyer
in third, Tony Dunker in fourth and Brandon Lennox in fifth. Dunker, Meyer and
Long took the heat race wins with Terry Wilson grabbing the checkered flag in
the B-Main. Long made it a perfect night as he claimed the win in the Advance
Trading Trophy Dash.
Chris Rees looked real strong in leading the first eight laps of the Hobby Stock
Main Event but Todd Reickert had other ideas a Reichert charge up through the
field to grab the lead on the ninth lap as Rees began to fade back into the
field. Reichert then held off Steve Carlin at the finish line to take the win
followed by Travis Booher in third, Michael Lay in fourth and Rees in fifth.
Carlin and Reichert both took heat race wins.
Steven DeLonjay dominated the Hornet feature event as he led all fifteen
circuits on the way to the checkered flag. The event was slowed by only one
caution period as Cody Griggs rolled in turn one and two on the thirteenth lap.
Griggs was uninjured and climbed from his car, rolled it back onto its wheels
and drove away to restart and finish the event. DeLonjay was followed to the
finish line by Joe Gollaher, Levi Long, Galen Hassler and Lew Aikman. Aikman and
DeLonjay were the heat race winners.
The next action at Quincy Raceways will be on Sunday, April 22 with Tom Boland
Ford presenting all four regular Quincy Raceways classes, the Budweiser IMCA
Late Models, Miller Lite Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Hornets. The Tri-State
Challenge Series for the Fastrack Late Models will be a special added attraction
as they will be racing for a $1000 first prize in the third stop after racing at
Jacksonville on Friday the 20th and Spoon River on the 21st. Call Eric Rudd for
more information on the Fastrack Tri-State Challenge at 314-808-8415. Gates open
