SULLIVAN SAILS TO O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES WIN AT I-30 SPEEDWAY

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 4) – Jack Sullivan used home field advantage Wednesday night to chalk up his career-first USMTS victory at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

Sullivan, of nearby Greenbrier, Ark., grabbed the lead on lap 2 of the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series 40-lap main event and never looked back. A caution flag with seven laps to go closed the gap between Sullivan and Stilwell, Okla.'s Eddie Martin, but Sullivan was able to power away from the competition on the restart and sailed to a $2,000 payday in Round 2 of Southern Speedweek.

Eight-time O’Reilly USMTS National Champion and defending O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series champ Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, out-dueled Martin for the runner-up position, but was unable to challenge the 32-year-old Sullivan for the lead.

Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., finished fourth to record his tenth top-10 finish in eleven starts, while Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, rounded out the top-5.

Tommy Weder Jr. finished sixth and earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award after racing from 19th on the 24-car starting grid. Johnny Bone Jr., Bryan Rowland, polesitter Casey Findley and John O. Whittington finished seventh through tenth, respectively.

After earning the AFCO Pole Award for earning the most heat race passing points among the 44 entries, local ace Randy Weaver suffered engine problems after his heat and was forced to use a back-up car and a track provisional to start the Holley "A" Main where he finished 16th.

After an impressive run from 14th to win the first 15-lap Real Racing Wheels "B" Main, O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes suffered mechanical problems early in the main event and did not finish. Nonetheless, Hughes continues atop the rankings with a 12-point cushion (991 to 979) over Holzkamper. Weder remains third with 878 points, followed by Whittington (791), Paul White (766), Shane Hebert (725), Rowland (716), Sanders (697), Brandon Kenny (695) and Dereck Ramirez (690).

Whittington remains the points leader in the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year standings in a hotly-contested battle for the $2,000 season-ending top prize. While Whittington's 204 points in 34 more than his closest challenger, a three-way tie exists for second between Hebert, Ramirez and Morgan Bagley, while Rowland is just two more points back in fifth.
