Rookie Road Warrior: Deal ready to mix it up with USMTS in 2010

WALNUT, Iowa (February 26) – Nick Deal is ready for a new challenge. Entering just his third year of modified competition, “The Real Deal” is ready to take on the cars and stars of the United States Modified Touring Series in search of the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year title with the nation’s top dirt modified racing attraction.

“The learning opportunities traveling with these guys are endless,” said Deal, who earned the 2008 IMCA National Rookie of Year Award. “We want to do some traveling, have fun and race as many tracks as we can to help us learn the different tracks and racing conditions. It will also be nice not changing gears every night and coming home with the same engine.

“Our main goals are to learn and, of course, win the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year title, but we’d like to just make the shows and get some valuable seat time and maybe win one if it all falls together. We seem to work a lot harder if we have a mission as we did in '08.”

Deal has had a taste of running with the rugged USMTS road warriors. During the 2009 campaign, the driver from Walnut, Iowa, raced with the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour during its mid-season swing through Iowa, and learned a lot from the experience.

“I’ve got to be more patient and wait for the right time to make moves,” he said. “The holes fill up fast. Those guys are a lot faster and things happen quickly. You’d better bring your ‘A’ game if you want to be in the show when you race with the USMTS.”

Deal, who turns 18 years old this May, will be piloting a Harris Chassis powered by WAM Racing Engines for the 2010 campaign. Sponsors of the #55d Modified will be M43 Chrome Shop, Rose City Sign Company, Total Performance Parts, All Star Tire, Youngren Farms, Race Day Prints, Aero Race Wheels, AFCO, Bob Harris Race Tech, JR Motorsports, Pink Poodle Restaurants and Ryan Auto Parts.

Last season, then 20-year-old Grant Junghans of Manhattan, Kan., captured the 2009 DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year title after a spirited season-long battle with friend Mike Hansen, Colt Mather, younger brother Chase Junghans and second-generation ace Ryan Dolan.

Previous DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year Award winners:

2009 – Grant Junghans, Manhattan, Kan.
2008 – Brandon Kenny, Woodward, Okla.
2007 – Scott Green, Derby, Kan.
2006 – Jay Poidinger, Somerset, Wis.
2005 – Brad McEwan, Storm Lake, Iowa
