World Modified Dirt Track Championship postponed to July 27-30

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (March 31) -- This winter has lasted for what seems like an eternity to race fans throughout the Great Plains and Upper Midwest, and it appears that Mother Nature is reluctant to release her grip on the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

With wet and bitter cold weather forecasted for Southern Minnesota next week, officials from the Deer Creek Speedway and United States Modified Touring Series have reluctantly postponed the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship.

The most-talked-about event in dirt track racing is now scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, July 27-30.

“Racing is supposed to be fun,” said USMTS President Todd Staley. “If it wasn’t fun, none of us – the fans, the drivers and the track promoters – would go through the personal and financial expense, hard work and risk that we do for this sport.”

The National Weather Service is calling for nighttime temperatures in the 30s, with a good chance of rain and possibly snow throughout next week.

“Unfortunately, even if the weatherman is wrong and we don’t get any precipitation next week it is still going to be uncomfortably cold and that will not be fun for anybody.”

Other than the change of dates for the blockbuster event, everything else remains the same for the.

To date, a record 145 different drivers from 23 different states have added their name to the list of possible one-armed bandits that will leave Deer Creek Speedway on July 30 with the $20,000 top prize.

In addition to the whopping $20,000 going to the winner, each of the 30 main event qualifiers will pocket a minimum of $1,500.

While the race will be sanctioned and officiated by the United States Modified Touring Series, the World Modified Dirt Track Championship will be a non-points USMTS race that features a one-of-a-kind qualifying format.

Drivers can register to qualify on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Racers registering for Wednesday or Thursday may also purchase a “mulligan” that allows them to qualify a second day if they aren’t satisfied with their result on the first day.

If they take a mulligan, however, they forfeit the result from the first night of qualifying.

Those who register for Friday will get just one qualifying day, but all drivers return on Championship Saturday to compete in feature races.

Group time trials will be staged each day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The top six qualifiers in each heat race will be inverted for starting positions in their heat races.

Points will be awarded each night for time trials, heat races, “B” Mains and the “A” Main with the top six in overall points each night being locked into the $20,000-to-win World Modified Dirt Track Championship main event on Saturday night.

The highest overall points earner during the three days of qualifying will earn the pole for the Saturday's “A” Main, second most points in the middle of the front row, third most points on the outside of the front row and so on for the 18 qualified drivers.

Saturday’s program will feature an “alphabet soup” of main events with the highest non-qualified points earner on the pole of the “B” Main and the lowest points earner from the previous three days at the back of the “H” Main (or lowest main event staged).

Six drivers will advance from each main event to the next, with 12 cars advancing from the “B” Main to the “A” Main to create a 30-car starting field for the championship race that will feature a three-wide start.

Nearly $100,000 has been earmarked for Saturday’s “A” Main alone, with a total purse of more than $160,000 posted for the four-day extravaganza.
