Schmitt, Broszeit take opening night checkers at Budweiser USRA Stock Car Nationals

BRITT, IA. (Aug. 9, 2006) - The 2nd Annual Budweiser USRA Stock Car Nationals presented by Kabrick Distributing kicked off on Wednesday with qualifying races and preliminary features for the USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Modifieds at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa.

With close racing in every contest, the race fans were treated to a night of pure action featuring the best of the best in both classes

In the B-Mod main event, Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown crossed the finish line first, but then rolled across the scales and weighed-in 20 pounds underweight and was disqualified. That handed the win over to Postville's Jimmy Broszeit, who earned every bit of his fortune by racing from the 18th starting position in the 21-car field after struggling in his heat race.

Logan Brown of Messervey was uplifted from third to second in the final rundown, followed by Doug Cook of Whittemore, Doug McCollough of Webster City and Nathan Chodur of Lake Mills, who started 20th. Forest City's Jesse Hoeft benefited most from Gustin's DQ as he moved up in the finishing order from seventh to sixth and earned the final transfer spot into Friday night's $1,000-to-win, $400-to-start main event.

The USRA Stock Car feature was a rich crowd-pleaser as Jon Snyder of Ames did something that not many drivers have been able to accomplish this season: he passed track points leader Tom Schmitt of Independence. Schmitt, who started on the pole, regained the lead soon thereafter when Snyder jumped the cushion and made contact with Travis Hoeft of Forest City. Both Snyder and Hoeft restarted at the tail of the field while Schmitt held on to score the victory.

Racing throughout the field was intense as three of the top five finishers came from deep in the field on the starting grid. Waucoma's Tory Reicks, who held off Schmitt to win the USRA Stock Car Shootout at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway on June 30, came from the 17th starting spot to finish second and set up a heated rematch in Friday's $5,000-to-win, $1,000-to-start main event.

Kevin Bidne of Decorah finished third after starting 14th and Ryan Cook of West Point wound up fourth. Polk City's Steve Jackson came from 18th to finish fifth while 20th-starting Shawn Peter of Mabel, Minn., grabbed the sixth and final transfer spot into Friday's Budweiser USRA Stock Car Nationals main event.

Wednesday's top six finishers in both the USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Modifieds will fill the first six spots of the inside rows of Friday's finales, with Thursday night's top six making up the outside rows. The remaining spots will be earned through last-chance races for both classes on Friday.
