DEAL, WOOD CONQUER 4TH ANNUAL MUSCO LIGHTING GREAT AMERICAN
STOCK CAR CHALLENGE
by: Jeff Nun
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 14) - After two nights of racing and a wild finish
Thursday night, Lance Deal of Fort Dodge, Iowa, took the checkers at the
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, for the 4th Annual MUSCO Lighting
Great American Stock Car Challenge presented by Mike’s Tire and Alignment and
PBM Performance Products.
Deal pocketed $3,000 for his victory against a strong field of USRA Stock Cars.
After failing to qualify for the main event on Wednesday, Deal raced his way
from a last chance race on Thursday night and started 11th in the 30-lap main
event.
After taking the white flag, the final lap got really exciting when Tom Schmitt
of Independence, Iowa, made contact with leader Tom Hovey of Decorah, Iowa, in
turn 2, sending Hovey spinning while Schmitt continued on. Racing action
continued with three- and four-wide racing down the back stretch with the
front-runners battling three-wide coming out of turn 4 for the checkered flag.
Deal crossed the line first with Shane Weller of Agency, Iowa, in second,
followed by Matt Greiner of Washington, Iowa, in third and 17-year-old Modified
ace Jake Neal of Omaha, Neb., in fourth.
Schmitt, who led early in the race, was penalized for rough driving and was
scored in the last spot (21st) among the cars on the final lap. The fans got to
see one of the most exciting races in the last four years.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature race was just as exciting with two- and three-wide
racing from front to back. Last year's USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing
Series national champion Nathan Wood of Keswick, Iowa, and Eldon, Iowa's Jason
McDaniel swapped the lead several times before Wood finally took the lead for
good with two laps remaining. Teammate Ryan Vicker of Creston, Iowa, who raced
his way from the 15th starting spot, took second by passing McDaniel on the last
lap.
Cresco, Iowa's Chris Hovden snagged the fourth spot after starting 11th, while
Jim Lampe of Carroll, Iowa, rounded out the top-5 finishers.
The USRA B-Mod feature was won by Brett Moffitt, who also took the win on
Wednesday night — a clean sweep for the 14-year-old racer from Grimes, Iowa.
Paul Underwood of Ottumwa, Iowa, took the second spot with Andrew Schroeder of
Keswick, Iowa, third and Josh Gesell of Decorah, Iowa, in fourth.
Next Wednesday, June 20, will see the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing
Series back in action featuring MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars,
USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks. Pro-Line Buildings will also present the
Preacher Feature with local clergymen trying their luck on the Mahaska County
Half-Mile Monster. Gates open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 7:15 and racing to
follow.
The Southern Iowa Speedway is located one half-mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then
four blocks north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). For
