Van Genderen, Carter notch Iron Man Challenge wins at Southern Iowa Speedway

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 20) -- Mike Van Genderen of Newton and Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter took home top honors Wednesday night as the Iron Man Challenge invaded the Southern Iowa Speedway during the Southern Iowa Fair presented by KBOE Radio.

Van Genderen started sixth on the grid in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car main event but clawed his way to the front and held off Churdan’s Jason Minnehan to garner the $700 winner’s share of the prize money.

Kevin Donlan of Decorah won the Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout just eight days ago at the Mahaska County Monster, and returned to finish third Wednesday night ahead of McClelland’s Jeff Joldersma and defending Iron Man Challenge champion Nathan Wood of Sigourney.

Tom Schmitt finished sixth after starting 18th, seventh was Matt Greiner, Todd Staley earned the eighth spot, 2009 USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car National Champion Tory Reicks was ninth and Chris Ullrich rounded out the top 10.

It was the second win of the season for Van Genderen, who finished second in last year’s inaugural Iron Man Challenge season for the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars. He won the opening night main event last Monday during the Musco Great American Stock Car Shootout.

Wood is the current points leader, 28 markers ahead of Justin Temeyer who failed to finish Wednesday night’s main event.

In USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod action, Carter added another piece of hardware to his ever-expanding trophy room with his third Iron Man Challenge victory of the 2011 campaign.

Despite starting seventh, Carter quickly raced to the front of the field and sailed away for his fifth win of the season at the half-mile Osky oval and a $500 payday.

Fellow Oskaloosa youngster Carter VanDenBerg finished second, with early race leader Andrew Schroeder of Keswick in third and two more Oskaloosa pilots - John VanDenBerg and Curtis VanDerWal – rounding out the top 5 finishers.

Teenage sensation Jenae Gustin was sixth to record her third straight top-10 in Iron Man Challenge competition, while Jared Timmerman, Matt Lettow, Brandon Leeman and Parker Hale finished seventh through tenth.

It was Lettow’s first finish outside of the top 5 in his nine starts this season, but he continues to hold a big advantage in the points standings over Timmerman.

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Dustin Griffiths of Ottumwa continued his stranglehold on the division with his third straight win.

Donavon Nunnikhoven of Sully, Grinnell’s Todd Reitzler, Steve Allen of Oskaloosa and Kris Walker of Oskaloosa rounded out the top 5.

The Iron Man Challenge will make its debut at the Bloomfield Speedway on Thursday night in conjunction with the USMTS Modifieds for the only stop at the 3/8-mile speedplant this season.

Hot laps begin Thursday at 6:45 p.m. with the first heat race slated to go green at 7:15. Also on the card will be Hobby Stocks and Hornets.

Casey’s General Stores will have discount coupons good for $2 off adult admission at locations in Bloomfield, Ottumwa and Memphis, Mo. To find the location nearest you, visit www.caseys.com.

Fans will also get plenty of excitement before and after the races as Thursday’s event happens during the annual Davis County Fair with dozens of activities for families and people of all ages, including games, shows and lots of great food.

The Bloomfield Speedway is a 3/8-mile slightly-banked clay oval located 1.0 mile west of Bloomfield on US 63/SR 2, then 0.8 mile north on CR J40 (at the Davis County Fairgrounds). For more information call 641-799-0009 or on race day call the track hotline at 641-664-2500.
