Reicks, Carter win Iron Man Challenge finales at Highway 3 Raceway; Van Genderen and Carter claim points titles

ALLISON, Iowa (Sept. 1) – A grueling season-long campaign wrapped up with a thrilling finale Thursday night at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, as two repeat winners captured the checkered flags while two new drivers emerged as 2011 champions of the Iron Man Challenge for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods.

Tory Reicks of Waucoma pocketed the $700 top prize in the Stock Car main event with his second feature win of the season.

After starting fifth in the field, the 2009 American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series Stock Car National Champion worked his way to the front on the big, smooth half-mile clay oval, and then held off veteran Steve Jackson of Polk City or the victory.

Polesitter Jason Minnehan of Churdan held on for a third-place showing while two-time USRA National Champion Tom Schmitt of Independence came home fourth ahead of Decorah’s Kyle Falck, who battled his way into the top 5 from the 15th starting spot.

Needing to win or finish second to steal the season-long Iron Man Challenge title, Kevin Donlan of Decorah could only manage a sixth-place finish while Mike Van Genderen of Newton claimed the title of 2011 Iron Man Challenge champion in the Stock Car division despite a 12th-place finish Thursday night.

For Van Genderen, this year’s title was a sweet reversal of fortune after finishing just three points behind Nathan Wood in the final standings of last year’s inaugural season for the Iron Man Challenge.

Donlan ended up 10 markers behind Van Genderen in this year’s final tally. Justin Temeyer finished third, followed by Reicks, Nathan Wood, Jackson, Jeff Joldersma, Todd Staley, Chris Ulrich and Minnehan.

As champion, Van Genderen earned $2,000 for his efforts.

In B-Mod action Thursday night, Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa took off from the outside of the front row and went on to win his sixth Iron Man Challenge main event of the season in just eleven starts.

Alex Zwanziger of Nashua finished second, Josh Bonnstetter of Slayton, Minn., continued his late-season surge with a third-place finish, Oskaloosa’s Carter VanDenBerg came home fourth and Brian Schrage of Cresco rounded out the top-5 finishers.

In addition to earning $700 for the win, Carter also clinched the season-long Iron Man title for the B-Mods to earn an additional $700.

A trip to victory lane or a runner-up finish by Carter Thursday night was good enough to claim the crown, regardless of what his nearest combatants did in the feature.

It was a heart-breaking end to a great season for Matt Lettow, who led the B-Mod points every step of the way since winning the first event of the year in Winston, Mo., back in April only to see it slip away on the final night of the campaign.

Brandon Hare was also mathematically alive coming into Thursday’s tilt, but he finished 18th in Thursday’s main event to eliminate any chance at the title.

While Lettow finished 19th in the main event, he held on to second place in the final standings – an unsatisfying consolation prize after an impressive season where he racked up thirteen top-5 finishes in seventeen starts, but still 22 markers short of Carter’s points total.

Hare took third in the final Iron Man Challenge rankings for the B-Mods, followed by VanDenBerg, Bonnstetter, Schrage, Parker Hale, Jared Timmerman, Brandon Leeman and Ben Kates.

During the 2011 season for the Iron Man Challenge, there were 130 different Stock Car competitors (exactly the same as last year) while 237 different B-Mod drivers took part in the series during the first year for their division.

More than $140,000 in event purses was doled out to 367 drivers during the 19-race grind.

Officials are already making plans for the third season of the Iron Man Challenge in 2012.
