Cedar Rapids, IA  (August 8, 2014) – Another great field of cars were on hand for Zimmerman Auto Center Night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway Friday night. All six divisions of the Hy Vee Racing series were in action.

The Sunline Hornets feature saw Kurt Bohnsack pick up his ninth win of the season as he held off Dallas Chandler for the win. Drew Nickell led the opening lap with Bohnsack and Brad Schmidt close behind. Bohnsack cleared the lead on lap three with Brad Schmidt right behind.  By lap nine, Dallas Chandler had moved past Schmidt and was mounting a challenge for the lead but Bohnsack was able to maintain the lead despite repeated challenges from Chandler. Schmidt almost got second place back on the final lap when Chandler slipped up the track trying  one last move for the point. Chandler was able to maintain second with Schmidt posting a very strong third-place run.

Dave McCalla, who has run a limited schedule this season, picked up his second feature win of the season in the Mountain Dew Sportsmen Friday night. McCalla took the lead on lap five and left the field behind with Bob Ahrendsen and Dave Ballstaedt taking turns in second place through the first ten laps. With five laps to go, Greg Borchardt moved to second and set his sights on McCalla. That run was short-lived as caution waved with three laps remaining. McCalla held off Borchardt on the restart and pulled away again on the final lap. Borchardt finished second with Greg Hentrich scoring third in another strong run.

Iwinner and the current point leader Ryan Luedtke finishing third.

Point leader Nathan Ballard picked up his 7th win of the season in the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks after starting ninth on the grid and surviving multiple cautions in the feature that looked more like a demolition derby than a race at times. The caution flag slowed the action five times over the 15 lap feature. The first three laps saw three different leaders with Malena Clement and Adam Petrzelka holding the point before Ballard scored the point on lap three. From that point it was a survival race to the checkered flag. Matt Petrzelka came through the field from the fourth row to finish second and Jim Hanson came from the back row to finish third.

With a season-high eighteen Dublin City Pub INEX Legends signed in to do battle, the action was fast and furious with several out of state drivers on hand battling for national points.  Brady Fox-Rhode was the early leader while Cory Talkaska took the point on lap seven. The race did see its share of cautions in the midst of some very hard racing. Talaska held the lead until two laps to go when eventual race winner Tim Brockhouse took command. Talaska maintained second to the checkered flag with Aaron Moyer finishing third for a clean sweep by the out of town drivers.

Finally, Griffin McGrath claimed the top spot in the Carpetland USA Late Models. McGrath took the lead on lap ten after Scott Siems  and Tim Plummer led early laps, survived a couple late cautions and left little doubt who had the fastest car on the track as he notched his fourth run of the season.  Plummer, who leads the points, finished in second while Michael Ostdiek, A Lakeville, MN driver, finished third in his first visit to Hawkeye Downs Speedway.

Just two weeks remain in the season and all six divisions are slated to be back in action next Friday night, August 15.
