LIL’RACER CAR CLUB HOSTS GRIFFIN TAUKE ON “KIDS WITH CANCER-THEIR NIGHT AT THE TRACK”

(Cedar Rapids, IA 5/15/2015)—Friday night was “Lil Racer Car Club Night” at Hawkeye Downs Speedway as the club hosted ‘Kids with Cancer-Their Night at the Track” and also “Kids Riding in Race Cars.”

The Dodge Street Tire Lil’Racer Car Club welcomed Griffin Tauke and his family to the track Friday night. Griffin has a rare form of cancer and in addition to being the VIP of the night, he was also named an honorary member of Speedway Fire and Rescue. Griffin got a ride in the B7 Hornet of Brad Schmidt and he and members of his family also rode in a Cedar Rapids Fire Department Fire Truck during the National Anthem.

Griffin also received a large trophy, a T-shirt autographed by all the Hawkeye Downs drivers and even got a special visit from Joey Gase who was back home in Cedar Rapids for  the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway.

In Hy-Vee Racing series action,  Dallas Chandler scored his first feature win of 2015 in the Miller Time Hornets division after taking the lead on lap five. Drew Nickell led the first four circuits before surrendering the lead to Chandler. Kurt Bohnsack, last weeks’ winner, came from the back of the pack to finish second. Todd Ness finished third.

Defending champion Nathan Ballard wasted little time in rocketing to the lead in the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks feature,  going from last to first in less than two laps.  Fellow Marengo driver Jason Sherman, who started alongside Ballard finished second while Jayson Scott posted a third place run.  Ballard lapped the field through fifth place to notch his second feature win in as many starts.

One of the best features of the night was in Mountain Dew Sportsmen. Greg Hentrich led most of the race with second through fifth place log-jammed fighting for position behind him. Jim Hanson pulled along side Hentrich with fifth laps remaining and squeezed into the lead one lap later.

Dave McCalla, who started at the tail of the field, followed Hanson around Hentrich and with three laps to go he wrestled the lead from Hanson and held off the field for the win.  Bob Ahrendsen finished third after starting in row 4 next to McCalla. Much of the field raced side-by side for the entire feature.

Minnesota driver Brady Fox-Rhode posted his second straight feature win of the season in the Dublin City Pub INEX Legends feature, besting a 20-car field.

Bryce Bailey saw a huge lead evaporate on Lap 11 after a spin brought out the caution flag. Two laps after the action restarted, Tim Goettsch took command with Fox-Rhode right on his tail. A couple of circuits later, Fox-Rhode slipped around Goettsch  for the lead and the win. Goettsch maintained second while Brody Willett charged into a third-place finish.

Finally, Caleb Adrian took advantage of a favorable starting slot, rocketed into the lead as the green flag dropped, and was never challenged while cruising to his first career feature win in Carpetland USA Late models presented by Performance Concepts.  Adrian suffered some bad luck last week and with the starting grid an inversion of last weeks’ finish he found himself on the point for this weeks’ feature.

Griffin McGrath did everything he could to keep up with Adrian, but couldn’t make up any ground over the course of the 25-lap race running a full second behind Adrian at the stripe. Tim Plummer finished third after starting near the back of the field.

Racing resumes next week with lineups set by two-week feature point average, inverted. Next week is Corridor Motors Night and is also a Regional Qualifier for INEX Legends.
