GRIFFIN MCGRATH TOPS LATE MODELS ON MCGRATH AUTO GROUP NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS SCHULTE, BOHNSACK, MCCALLA AMONG OTHER WINNERS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (August 3, 2012) – McGrath Automotive Group, a longtime Hawkeye Downs Speedway sponsor, got a little extra in return for sponsoring Friday night’s program Friday  as Griffin McGrath piloted the #64 Performance Concepts Late Model to victory. Brad Osborn jumped on the lead heading to turn one on the opening lap with Tim Plummer in close pursuit.  Plummer took the point on lap three with Osborn trying to fight back on the inside. Griffin McGrath moved to second on lap five and quickly moved to challenge Plummer for the lead.

Three laps later, McGrath powered around Plummer on the backstretch in what would be the winning pass. The field did bunch up for a spin on lap 18 but McGrath quickly built a sizable lead when green flag racing resumed. Plummer maintained second to the checkered flag with last weeks’ winner, Thor Anderson, finishing third.

In other Papa Johns Cup/ i-Wireless Championship Series action, Brad Chandler emerged from an early three-car battle between himself, point leader Matt Petrzelka, and Derek Parrott as the leader on lap five. The trio raced clean until five laps remained when Petrzelka and Chandler got together. Chandler maintained his spot with Petrzelka heading to the rear. Petrzelka recovered from the caution and worked his way back into second place by the time the checkers flew. Matt Lacoursiere finished third, Parrott was fourth , and Dennis Carson was fifth.

Dave McCalla notched another win in the Mountain Dew Sportsmen, taking the lead from Greg Hentrich on lap four and motoring to the relatively easy win. Hentrich maintained second through the race with Brian Gibson, piloting the Ben Glascock machine, finishing third. Dave Ballstaedt was fourth and Kandi Floyd crossed the stripe in fifth.

One of two features with an abundance of cautions was the Dublin City Pub Legends. Solo spins and contact among the leaders were the rule in the race with the most significant caution coming with three laps remaining. Bryce Bailey and  point leader Kevin Korsmo were battling for the lead when the two tangled heading into turn one. Their momentum carried them onto the half-mile and out of the race for the time being. That put Rod McGlothlen into the lead which he held to the checkered flag. Dennis Diercks finished second and Al Diercks was third.

After a “no-start” on the first lap,  Ed O’ Brien led  the opening lap before Dave McCalla put the 88 machine on the point. Mike Schulte stayed with McCalla, was challenging for the lead on lap three and one lap later he took control for good. McCalla chased Schulte the rest of the way including trying to regain the lead on a caution with four laps to go. Brian Gibson finished third while Jake Griffin was fourth, and O’Brien was fifth.

Finally in Sunline Hornets, Kurt Bohnsack recovered nicely after a rough go last week by winning this weeks’ feature. Bohnsack took the lead on lap three and wasn’t seriously challenged the rest of the way which included a cuple cautions which kept scrambling the field. It actually took three tries to get a clean start and despite the cautions the race was action-packed throughout as most of the faster cars started toward the back of the invert. Shane Hanson worked into second by lap five but couldn’t quite mount a serious challenge on Bohnsack as the final laps ticked off the board. Dallas Chandler finished third, John Ness was fourth and Ian Pate crossed the flagstand in fifth.

Weekly racing resumes next Friday night with all six divisions again in action. Just three more racing events are scheduled for the 2012 season.
