Championship Battles Came to a Close on Pepsi Cola and KBOE Radio Night

– Championship point battles ended on Wednesday night with Pepsi Cola Mahaska Bottling Company and KBOE Radio Night at the races. Fans were able to get up close with the drivers that were in attendance at intermission as each driver in attendance was introduced.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature and despite only having three cars, it was close racing the entire ten laps. John Whalen lead the first six laps before Track Champion Merv Chandler grabbed the lead away on lap seven. Chandler went on to take his 8th win of the season at SIS. John Whalen held off his brother Bill Whalen to take second in the feature and the points championship.

In the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stock feature it was Aaron Osweiler grabbing the lead but Doug Sylvester was right on his back bumper the entire way the first six laps. The yellow came out just after the completion of lap six when Dustin Griffiths experience some troubles in turn four. Osweiler remained out front until lap eight when Danny Thrasher snuck by for the lead. Thrasher held off Sylvester to take his 2nd win at the big half mile. Sylvester in his second visit to the speedway found his way in the runner up spot. Craig Brown, Mike Hughes and Justin Hook rounded out the top 5. Bill Bonnett was crowned the 2013 track champion.

Bill Davis started right where he left off the week before in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature. Davis and the field saw the yellow come out on lap five when Casey Greubel and Scott Dickey spinning in turn four. On the restart, Davis saw Andrew Schroeder and Cayden Carter on his back bumper and he was able to hold them off, Carter worked his way in to 2nd and tried hard to get by the veteran. It appeared after Carter showed his nose to Davis on lap 13 that Davis was going to take the win but the youngster did not give up as Carter made the move to grabbed the lead in turn three just before the white flag. Carter went on to take the win with Davis in 2nd. Schroeder finished 3rd, Tyler Groenendyk was 4th and Jacob Murray was 5th.

Logan Anderson grabbed the early lead in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature, just like he has done a lot this year. Anderson lead until the caution waived on lap four when Eric Flander went on a spin cycle in turn two. Track Champion Curtis VanDerWal, who worked his way up to fifth spot got a great restart and grabbed the lead away on lap five. VanDerWal looked to be pulling away but the yellow came out on lap nine when Charley Webber spun on the front stretch and then the restart was waived off. VanDerWal saw Tyler Heckart and Super Nationals Champion Carter VanDenBerg on his back bumper. VanDerWal held them off until lap 14 when VanDenBerg snuck by to take the lead. VanDenBerg took the win meanwhile VanDerWal came home in the runner up spot. Matthew Looft finished in the third spot, Heckart and Lowry was fourth and fifth respectively.

Final feature of the night was the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature and before a single lap was completed the caution waived when Kris Walker, Damon Murty, Nathan Wood, Jason Cook, Mike Johnston, Randy Killen and Alan Van Gorp all got together after Rich Vogt caught crossed up, Vogt continued moving the others all bunched up in turn four. Donavon Nunnikhoven grabbed the lead on the restart but the caution waived again for debris in turn three just after the first lap was scored. Nunnikhoven continued to lead until the caution came out for the final time on lap five, Nunnikhoven then pulled in with troubles that handed the lead over to Brad Pinkerton. Pinkerton lead the remaining laps to take his third win of the season and Todd Reitzler finished 2nd. Cayden Carter driving the Roger Kelderman Stock Car came home 3rd, Corey Stout finish 4th and Jason Minnehan was 5th. Track Champion was Nathan Wood.

After having the initial start called back in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature it was “From Aross the Street” Corey Stout grabbing the lead but just after the completion of lap two the caution came out when Jason Cook, Curt Hook and Brad Pinkerton got together on the backstretch. Stout refused to let that bother him as he began to pull meanwhile Zack Vanderbeek was working his way through the field. Stout held off a late race charge from Vanderbeek to take his first win of the season at SIS. Kris Walker finish third, Nathan Wood was fourth and Brad Pinkerton was fifth.

Weekly Racing has finished up at the Southern Iowa Speedway but racing is not done yet as the Speedway will host the 27th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge on Friday and Saturday October 4th and 5th. On Friday Night, Hot Laps will start at 6:45pm and Racing to Follow meanwhile Saturday Night, Hot Laps will be at 6pm and Racing to Follow.
