Cedar Rapids, IA  (July 5, 2014) – Hawkeye Downs fans have waited three years for the return of the ARCA Midwest Tour so the extra wait triggered by some early day rain showers that lingered into the afternoon only added a little longer to the wait. The wait was rewarded with a total of 186 laps of caution-free racing as part of the Coors Light Shootout and Music Fest presented  by McGrath Powersports and Liz Girl Logistics.

The schedule was shuffled and the start time pushed back but thanks to great effort by drivers, crews, Hawkeye Downs staff, Speedway Fire Rescue and fans the track was dried and the program went on.

The “ Merv Chandler Memorial 42” saw eighteen Sport Compact/Hornet cars take the green flag, which was about half the number that had registered for the event. The weather no doubt discouraged some of the traveling drivers from making the trip. Nevertheless, the eighteen cars put on a great show with some great battles that probably should have resulted in wrecks but somehow the drivers recovered on more than one occasion and kept the race green.

While Brad Chandler led the majority of the race, which saw all three Chandlers in the race running three wide at one point, Dallas and Nathan were always lurking and coming to the white flag lap Dallas made his move albeit a bold one. As he cleared the lead Brad and Nathan fought it out for second with both cars sideways exiting turn one. Brad won that battle and held on for second and Nathan maintained third.

Hawkeye Downs Hobby Stock driver Matt Petrzelka tried his luck in the race finishing fourth followed by Kyle Stark, a Wisconsin driver.

Lapped traffic was a big factor in the race making for some exciting moments as the leaders navigated through the traffic making for frequent three-wide racing.

The race also earned drivers IMCA points.
