Dalton Holds Bryant At Bay In Springfield USRA Feature While Morton Holds On To B Mod Win

| September 30, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, MO (September 29, 2012) – The “Quick-Quarter” of the Springfield Raceway was back in action Saturday night as USRA Modifieds and USRA B Modifieds competed for National Points and a exciting overall night of racing high-lighted the racing program with over 110 race teams competed.

In the USRA Modified feature, 6 time and 2012 track champion Jackie Dalton had his work cut out as Robbie Bryant kept the pressure on all night long in the 20 lap feature event.

Following the top 8 redraw, Dalton took the pole spot with veteran Jason Pursley to his outside. Dalton quickly jumped to the opening lead as Pursley followed while Robbie Bryant charged from 6th to third place. On lap 3, caution waved as Rusty Weir and Kyle Slagle got together in turn 4. On the restart, Bryant moved around Pursley and set his sights on leader Dalton. With a Lightning quick surface, Dalton would find Bryant closing ground as Pursley had hard charging Greg Hughes moving on him. At the halfway mark, 7th place starting Mitch Keeter began his move forward and moved around Hughes for position as Bryant was giving Dalton all he wanted in the race for first place. Bryant closed the gap to less than 1 car length as the lead dup kept the crowd on the edge of their seats while Keeter moved around Pursley on lap 12 for third spot. The final 5 laps would see Bryant pull even and once ahead of Dalton with Dalton getting credit back at the finish line. On lap 18, Dalton was able to shake Bryant in lapped traffic just enough to capture the win aboard his Doug’s Pro Lube/Garrison/Hoffman number 21 as Bryant brought the McCoy’s Metals/GRT/Arbuckle Engines 45 in a solid runner-up spot as Keeter in his Mid-American Rebuilders/TRE/Yeoman Engines, Pursley with his Campbell Racing/Allen Autosports and 10th starting Rex Merritt with the Bilstein Shocks/Yeoman Engines number 25 in the top 5 as 15 of the 20 starters completed the lead lap.

In USRA B Modified action, 2012 track champion Scott Drake and son Trevor Drake brought the talented field to the green flag as Scott Drake started pulling away quickly. while always hard-charging Steve Muilenburg followed suite with Trevor Drake and JC Morton close behind. The quick pace slowed on lap 8 as a multi-car gathering involving Jon Yeoman Jr., Chuck Becker, Jared Thulin, Logan Martin, Bobby Ratterree, and others brought out the red flag as young Martin was the worst for wear on the hook. On the restart, Morton was able to get around Muilenburg for the second place spot as Muilenburg jumped the extreme top groove cushion. Drake was pulling away until lap 14 when the driveshaft broke on the leader’s car ending his night. This place Morton into the lead as 2 time Midwest Modz champion Trevor Drake was putting on pressure to the leader while Muilenburg was applying the heat to young Drake. Morton was able to hold off young Drake’s charge in taking the win with Trevor Drake, Muilenburg, a fast moving Jon Yeoman Jr. and Don Luna completing the top 5.

The Midwest Modz feature event would be won after tech tonight as winner Rusty Forrest would be disqualified for an illegal carburetor. This handed a first time win this season to veteran driver Steve Moore of Springfield. While Forrest was long gone in the feature tonight Nathan Gold had a strong car early until heading to the pits with problems on lap 12 during the only caution in the feature. Moore drove an outstanding feature holding off many charges from Taylor Moore after getting around Taylor Moore a few laps earlier in what proved to be the winning pass. Following Moore to the finish was Taylor Moore, Todd McGregor, Bobby Gough, and Gary Krebs.

Jeremy Thulin would take the opening lead in the Pure Stock feature in his brother’s car and hold of numerous charges from 2011 track champion Jack Hamer and 2012 champion Brett Testerman to secure his first win of the season in an exciting 12 lap feature event as all 3 drivers were glued together. Tyler Schoen and Scott Lampe would complete the top 5 runners as the Pure Stocks were allowed to compete using their home track rules.

The Factory/Street Stock feature event brought several drivers to the track as no tech rules went to both classes. Darren Crisler showed he hasn’t forgot the fast way around Springfield Raceway as he took the combined Factory/Street Stock feature leading all 15 laps, but it wasn’t all that easy. Crisler got the jump on pole setter Bryan Tillman only to see caution wave as Ben Solberg, Matt Miller and Rodney Yost get together. On the restart, Crisler jumped to the lead with Tillman in hot pursuit until lap 4 when a flat tire ended his night. From the back of the pack, Solberg and Miller were coming quickly as Crisler pulled away from Clayton Powell. While Crisler was long gone, the race between Solberg and Miller was classic as they caught second place Powell by lap 11. Crisler in only his second race in this car took the win with Miller, Solberg, Powell, and Street Stock Champion Jim Reid Following.

The Young Lions got back to racing action as Wesley Smith and Kylan Garner showed the crowd how to kids under 16 run side by side. Smith running the middle lane and Garner up high. They ran like this all 12 laps with Smith securing the win in the closing 2 laps as Garner made a small bobble. Lexy VanZandt brought her car home in third place as Petran Motorsports helped to sponsor tonight’s event for the Young Lions.
