HAYS, KS (August 16)—Over 100 race teams gathered at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, on Saturday evening, August 16.  Double features were run in both the IMCA Stock Car and IMCA Modified divisions from a rain shortened program on August 2.

In the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car makeup feature, ‘The Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs of Colby took the lead at the drop of the green and led all 20 laps for his first win at Hays this year.  Brother Jeff Tubbs chased Nick most of the race but could not make a pass.  Angel Munoz got by Jeff Tubbs late to finish in the runner-up spot, with B.J. Wagoner fourth and Jason Davis fifth.

Bob Arnold led the opening lap of the second feature before Tyler Tipton of Weskan drove away for his first win at Hays this season.  A couple of cautions gave the rest of the field a chance, but Tipton pulled away each time to score the victory.  Jeff Tubbs, B.J. Wagoner, Nick Tubbs and Jason Schoenberger rounded out the top five.  Heat race victors were Jeff Tubbs and Nick Tubbs.

Hoxie’s Chris Heim followed suit and he led from green to checkered in the 20-lap S & W Supply IMCA Modified makeup feature for his first Hays victory.  Jesse Richter chased Heim the entire distance but had to settle for second, followed by point leader David Murray, Corey Lagroon and Cody Gearhart.

In the evening’s regular feature, Heim again looked to be the man to beat before ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick of Wakeeney took a lead he would not relinquish.  A couple of cautions kept the field bunched but Sherfick drove on for his first win of the season at RPM Speedway.  Kyle Rohleder finished second, trailed by Eddie Belec, Cody Gearhart and Troy Plummer.  Heat race winners were Rohleder, Gearhart and Heim.

Kurtis Pihl shot to the lead at the start of the Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Sport Mod feature and looked to be on his way to a win.  But Tony Fisher spun in turn four on lap 6 and was hit by Pihl, ending the leader’s night.  Brenden Damon led the field back to green but was then passed by Osborne’s Tracy Holloway.  Holloway held off a stellar field for his first trip to victory lane at Hays.  ‘The Money’ Man Clay Money, Daniel Gottschalk, Damon, and Cory Struckhoff completed the top five.  Nate Ginest, Eric Pfeifer and Pihl all won heat races.

Garrett ‘The Wild Child’ Hager won his fourth Rebel Tank Service IMCA Hobby Stock feature at his hometown track, and with the win, took the point lead.  Shay Simoneau led the first 5 laps before Brady Bencken assumed command.  Bencken led the field at the halfway mark of the 20-lap race before Hager made the winning pass on lap 12.  Adam Armstrong, the point leader going into the night, chased Hager but had a tire go down on the last lap, giving him a sixth place finish.  Travis Coop finished in the runner-up spot, trailed by Bencken, Colton Pfeifer and Mike Traskowsky.  Heat race victors were Armstrong, Kyle Pfeifer and T.C. McKain.

Hometown driver Kiowa Higdon drove to his seventh feature win of the year in the Tom’s Machine & Welding IMCA Sport Compact feature but was challenged all the way by Kirk Pfannenstiel.  Pfannenstiel led the first six laps before Higdon took the lead after a restart on lap 7.   Pfannenstiel then passed Higdon on lap 7 but Higdon got back out front on lap 8 and held on the final 2 laps.  Pfannenstiel had to settle for second, followed by Art Herzog, Michael Smith and Randy Murphy.  Herzog and Pfannenstiel were victorious in their heat races.

The race was sponsored by Argent Energy.  It was also ‘Girls Night Out’ with all ladies admitted free to the grandstand.

Racing returns to RPM Speedway on Saturday, August 30.  The United Rebel Sprint Series will make their final appearance of the season, and the NESmith Late Models will return.  IMCA Sport Compacts, Cruisers and School Buses will also compete.  Race time is 7:00 p.m.
