Exciting Opening to I-35 Speedway August racing!

| August 3, 2020

Winston, MO (August 1, 2020) –  What an exciting opening to I-35 Speedway August racing! McCarthy Autogroup Kid’s Night at the Races, on August 1 provided action, lots of action under the auspices of an approaching Full Moon (officially August 3).  If you came looking for action you got action, looking for racing how about three and four wide racing in the early laps of the B Mod feature, looking for spills yes, there were those also.

Feature time saw the B Mod B feature go green to checkered, won by Lonnie Hibner for the second week in a row.  The top 8 transferred to the A feature to be conducted later in the program.

The E Mods led off this night of A feature action.  Action that included a rough night for three of the drivers in the Top 5 in points with Kameron Hanes, Shaunie Lanning, and Michael Taylor III experiencing the approaching full moon’s tough luck.  When the checkered flag fell it was Casey Burnett claiming his fifth win of the season followed by Blake Bland at the line.  Wayne Stevens and Shane West rounded out the Top 4.

Bobby Ohrenburg grabbed the lead in Pure Stock racing on the first lap and held off numerous challengers for the 12-lap feature.  These challengers were on his bumper and sometimes two and three wide they included at various points DJ Barnes, Conrad Kaufmann, Kristchon Hisel, and Cody Ohrenburg.  Kaufman made a move to grab the lead on the last lap only to suffer a part failure on his car down the back straight (approaching full moon bad luck?).  As the checkered flag waived it was Bobby Ohrenburg with his first win of the season.  Blaine Yonts, Reili Yonts, and Travis Cavin rounded out the top four finishing order.

Sport Compacts came out in force with 22 cars ready for competition.  At the start of the race it was Dylan Bruhn grabbing the top position with John Willard in tow.  Bruhn easily got into lapped traffic early in the race but a lapped car trying to leave the track cost Bruhn having a shot for the win.  Willard took the point and the win followed by Jason McCaulley, Joseph Mick, and Christian Pease.

Lap eight of the Limited Late Model class you could have heard a pin drop because something not seen all year in this class, occurred.  First let’s back up to the start, as has been custom, 10 time winner Kerry Davis had earned himself a front row position next to Mike Taylor Jr.  Taylor  was set to lead the first lap but Davis pulled him on the back straight.  Then it was Centralia, Missouri’s Darek Wiss who passed Taylor for second and set his sites on Davis.  Lap 8 it happened, the crowd got silent, Wiss pulling up even and going around Davis and then pulling away.  But then here comes the pole sitter, no not Davis, Mike Taylor Jr. who has been knocking on the winners door all year.  Lap 12 Taylor passes Wiss and takes a full turn lead crossing first to the checkered flag.  Wiss was second, Davis third, and Gregg Truelove brought his machine home fourth.

The USRA B Mods took to the track and the first lap was simply a sight to behold, cars battling for position three and four wide, but when racing this close one mistake can spell disaster for multiple racers.  Lap 2 that close racing caused a five-car pileup on the front straight. The early battle was between Chase Galvan running the high side and Shadren Turner running the low side.  Within bumper distance was the 510 from Cody King from Oklahoma.  Late race the battle got so close that contact between Galvan and King led to the yellow coming out for Galvan and sending him to the tail of the field.  The ensuing restart had Turner and King battling for the lead and coming out of turn 4 to the checkered it was a side by side battle with Turner beating King to the finish.  Gabriel Hodges was third and Tyler Cadwallader finished fourth.

The USRA Stock Car feature saw last year’s champion Jeff Dixon work his way into the lead.  It became a two-car battle between Dixon and Austin Bouzek as they approached lapped traffic.  At the white flag they were side by side, Bouzek inside and Dixon on the outside.  Bouzek used a slide job coming out of turn 2 to take Dixon’s line.  Dixon tried to come back going into turn three but settled for second behind Bouzek.  Thomas Ground was third and Tony Manley brought his hotrod racer in fourth.

The USRA A Mod race was a battle between two drivers tied for the track points championship at the start of the night Mark Dotson and Tyler Hibner.  Furthermore, what a perfect setup they made up the front row coming to the green.  The early leader in this clash was Dotson as he grabbed the lead but Dotson slipped up the track coming out of turn 2 and Hibner wasted no time shooting underneath and grabbing the lead and then checking out on the field for his second win and a 26 point lead in the championship.  Lee Hibner made it a one two Hibner finish with his second place , Ed Noll was third and Tyler Grooms came home in fourth.

Next up at I-35 Speedway is the 5th Annual Smokin Trackside Barbeque Bash this Friday and Saturday, August 7th and 8th.  Racing both nights!
