(Cedar Rapids, IA 08/16/2013)— With just one week to go in the Hy-Vee/ I-Wireless Championship Series chase for 2013 victory lane was visited by familiar faces who also happen to riding the top of the point standings.

Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks, Matt Petrzelka posted a green to checkers run to grab his eleventh win of the season. The race was \slowed by two cautions but Petrzelka pulled away from the pack on each restart to secure the win. The best battle on the track was a mother-son race between Kandi and Jacob Floyd. Jaconb prevailed for second with Kandi finishing third.

Dave McCalla held off a lap three challenge from Jim Hanson as he racked up his ninth win of 2013. McCalla split Hanson and Dave Ballstaedt as the trio headed into turn two  while running three wide on the first lap and once McCalla took the lead he wasn’t giving it up. He and Hanson pulled away from the pack and after Hanson’s lap three challenge was thwarted McCalla widened his margin over the second place car of Hanson.

Last week’s winner, Ben Glascock, slipped around Dave Ballsteadt to take the third spot on lap nine but couldn’t gain much ground on the leaders as the final laps ticked off. Hanson settled for second and Glascock was third.

The Dublin City Pub INEX Legends feature was the most exciting of the night with three and four-wide racing coupled with just enough “give and take” to avoid any serious crashes. Dennis Diercks led almost the entire first half of the race holding off Caleb Adrian, Austin Kunert, Tim Goettsch and Kyle Diercks. However, Diercks may have been using up his tires holding off the hard chargers behind and on lap thirteen he lost the handle and spun, putting Caleb Adrian into the lead.

Adrian held the lead until lap 21 when Tim Goettsch rallied a charge for the lead. Adrian stayed in second while holding off a late-race challenge from Kevin Korsmo. Austin Kunert crossed the stripe in fourth and Bryuce Bailey was fifth.

The Miller Time Modified feature saw Tim Plummer wrestle the lead from Ryan Luedtke on lap seven and motor to his 12th win of the season. Plummer continued to stretch his lead as the laps ticked off and he crossed the stripe a dozen car lengths ahead of Luedttke  Luedtke held off Mike Schulte to finish second.

Earlier in the evening during their heat race, Brian Gibson and Craig Bender tangled in turn 4, badly damaging both cars and knocking them out of contention for the rest of the night.

The Sunline Hornets feature saw Kurt Bohnsack take the lead from Steve Woodrow on lap two and cruise to an easy victory. Woodrow maintained second and held off Brad Schmidt to finish second. Schmidt finished third and was followed to the stripe by Jose DeJesus and CJ Van Horn.

Bohnsack’s win was the seventh of the season.

Jay Jaspers did everything he could to hold off Tim Plummer in the Carpetland USA Late Models feature but eventually used up his tires and Plummer prevailed for his fifth win of the season. Plummer challenged for the lead briefly on lap three and again on lap fourteen but didn’t rally the winning pass until just five laps remained in the thirty-lap feature. The pair made slight contact in turn two with six laps to go as Jaspers was fighting the handling on his car and that was the opening Plummer needed to take control.

Thor Anderson slipped around Jaspers with a couple laps to go securing the second spot. Jaspers finished third, Andy Edwards was fourth, and Chad Siems was fifth.

The 2013 Hawkeye Downs racing season comes to a close next Friday night, August 23 with the Barron Motor Supply Season Championship.
