Fuqua & Shields Repeat, Higley and Seifert Also Get Wins

| September 15, 2012

KANSAS CITY, KS (Sept. 14, 2012) – Darron Fuqua was a satisfied driver in 2011 as he rolled to 11 wins and a track championship. The trouble for Fuqua was that he did it all at one track. He wanted more wins and he especially wanted wins at Lakeside Speedway.

Last season he never saw the checkered flag first at Lakeside, but early in the 2012 season he broke that barrier down.

As of last night Fuqua can lay claim to 10 total victories in 2012 and he has a whopping total of 5 at Lakeside Speedway. The victory was his 2nd straight win and it gives him the 2nd most wins in the division this season. Tim Karrick has the most with 6 wins.

When a diver gets a victory at Lakeside Speedway it’s never an easy task to repeat. The winner from the week before usually starts somewhere from rows 4 through 6, due to the tracks starting policy. After winning a week ago, Fuqua got the distinction of starting out on the outside of row number 4.

Nic Bidinger, another feature winner on the season, got out to a blistering pace. The driver from Perry, KS made it look easy as he built up a big lead.

Fuqua, in the meantime, had to work his way past a few cars before he found himself in the 2nd position. Once in 2nd, he took on the task of knocking Bidinger’s lead down. Lap after lap he was successful in getting up to Bidinger’s back bumber. Bidinger put up a solid effort in trying to keep Fuqua from making the pass. It wouldn’t be until lapped traffic showed up before Fuqua could even attempt to make the pass.

As the two drivers worked their way into lapped traffic, Fuqua would blast around the high side of a lapped car and Bidinger would choose the bottom line to get around the same racer. When they came to the stripe it was Fuqua taking over the lead. It still wouldn’t be that easy as Bidinger and Fuqua put on a great show for the fans going door-to-door battling for that top spot. Fuqua would find an easier path navigating lapped traffic and it would push him to a large lead and the victory.

Bidinger finished in the runner-up spot, Kerry Davis drove from 9th to finish 3rd in the main event, MLRA Late Model ace, John Anderson started 12th and finished 4th and Cody Agler rounded out the top 5.

It was just 7 days ago that Tim Shields through the monkey off his back and finally got his 1st Grand National feature win of 2012. It must not have been a monkey, but a gorilla because Shields has gotten so fast that a ton of weight must have been lifted off his back!

Shields pulled down his 2nd straight Grand National feature win on Friday night in impressive fashion.

Starting 8th on the grid, Shields wasted little time getting to the front where he would battle Don Marrs for the point position. The battle was one that wouldn’t last too long. Shields has figured something out in his race program that has restored him to his former self at Lakeside Speedway. It also doesn’t hurt that for the past two weeks, Shields has also stayed away from the mechanical problems and oddball trouble that has followed him this season.

At the end of the night when the checkered flag dropped on the field, Shields easily raced his way to win #2 on the season.

Gary Donaldson, racing with a new engine, came home in the 2nd position, Ben Kyle was able to finish 3rd after having been involved in an accident early in the feature, 4th was Jeff Miles and the points leader, Kelby Ostrander, had to borrow a car to finish in the 5th position.

Racing against a tough field of B Mods, Mike Higley took down his 7th win of the season on Friday night. Win #7 was also special for Higley as he picked up an extra $200, thanks to MasterTech Automotive (Riverside)!

As most B Mod features have gone in 2012, Higley’s win on Friday night came in exciting fashion.

Four laps remained in the B Mod feature and 4 of the best B Mod drivers, Higley, Nick Newton, Brad Smith and Gene Claxton, in the B Mod division were ready to shoot it out. At the drop of the green flag. Higley and Nick Newton, who have had some great battles in 2012 took to the top 2 spots. Smith worked the high line, Higley worked the middle line as they gave chase to Newton. Back and forth those two would go before Higley won the right to pull alongside Newton.

Higley, still working the middle groove, pulled closer to Newton on every lap until the two would come to the white flag door-to-door. On the final lap Higley would take a slight advantage into turn 3. As the two worked through the corner Newton would go up the hill and Higley would drive by Newton for the 7th win of the season.

Brad Smith finished a close 3rd, the youngster Chad Feather finished in the 4th position and Gene Claxton rounded out the top 5.

The points battle in the Factory Stock division has been a tight one over the past 5 weeks. After Friday night it’s starting to shape up as Justin Seifert picked up another victory on the season. Five drivers had a shot at the top spot during that time frame, but with the win, Seifert now heads into the final 2 points nights with a 29 point lead over Joe Smith Jr.

Friday night belonged to Seifert. He started on the pole position and from the top spot he never looked back on the way to an impressive win.

Vic Tranckino finished in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Joe Smith Jr., 4th was Bobby Tavis and Anthony Whitham finished in the 5th position.

Next week it’s the McCarthy Auto Group Jayhawk Modified Classic at Lakeside Speedway. Nothing but Modifieds for two straight nights Sept. 21st and 22nd! $5,000 to win and $1,000 to start awaits the drivers who can make their way into the A main.
