IMCA national awards banquet honors 2016’s best

LINCOLN, Neb. (Nov. 26) – IMCA honored the best of the best Saturday night, during the national awards banquet in Lincoln, Neb.

National champions taking their turns on stage and at the podium were Jordan Grabouski, Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified; Rob Toland, IMCA Late Model; Andy Shouse, IMCA EMI RaceSaver Sprint Car; Mike Nichols, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car; Shannon Anderson, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock; Jeffrey Abbey, Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod; Tony Olson, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod; and Nate Coopman, Sport Compact.

Nichols, who matched Coopman’s single-season record with 54 wins this season, and Anderson became the first drivers in IMCA’s modern era to win career sixth national crowns in the same division.

Coopman raced to his career fourth crown, Toland to his third and Grabouski to his second.

Shouse, Abbey and Olson all earned career-first national titles.

Modified regional champions included Cory Sample, Larry Shaw Race Cars Western; Grabouski, Jet Racing Central; Matt Guillaume, Razor Chassis South Central; Chris Abelson, BMS North Central; and A.J. Ward, Dirt Works Eastern.

Nichols reigned in the EQ Cylinder Heads Northern Region for Stock Cars while Westin Abbey ruled the EQ Cylinder Heads Southern Region ranks.

Hobby Stock regional champs were Anderson in the Big Daddy Race Cars Northern and Wesley Warren in the Charger Chassis Southern.

Receiving national rookie of the year awards were Tyler Frye, Modified; Kirby Schultz, Late Model; Zach Blurton, Sprint Car; Kyle Pfeifer, Stock Car; Tim Church, Hobby Stock; Kamera Kaitlin McDonald, Southern SportMod; Luke Johnson, Northern SportMod; and Richard Crow, Sport Compact.

Modified regional rookies of the year were Kelsie Foley, Western; Frye, Central; Cody Shoemaker, South Central; Billy Kendall, North Central; and Aaron Spearling, Eastern.

Foley is the first female driver to earn Regional ROY accolades.

Top Stock Car rookies were Pfeifer in the Northern Region and Andy Roller in the Southern.

Regional ROY Hobby Stock awards went to Church in the North and Larry Underwood in the South.

Champions at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s were Ricky Thornton Jr., Modified; Jeff Aikey, Late Model; Elijah Zevenbergen, Stock Car; Andrew Burg, Hobby Stock; Jeffrey Abbey, Southern SportMod; Doug Smith, Northern SportMod; and Josh Barnes, Sport Compact.

Modified drivers racing to special series crowns included Chris Abelson in the Hawkeye Dirt Tour; Jason Barnhill in the Bay Area Emerald Coast Tour; Kyle Brown in the Frostbuster; Kellen Chadwick in the Wild West Shoot Out; Hunter Marriott in the Kupper Chevrolet Dakota Classic Tour; Ryan McDaniel in the All-Star Modified Tour; Brad Sites, Atomicwraps.com Empire State Series; and Ricky Thornton Jr., Winter Challenge Series.

Tyler Bruening was champion and Cayden Carter the rookie of the year in the Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models.

Elijah Zevenbergen added another Kupper Chevrolet Dakota Classic Tour title to his resume.

Repeat winner of the Design 500 Lady Eagle award was Sport Compact driver Kaytee DeVries.

Attendance neared 600 for the banquet, held for the 10th consecutive year at the Cornhusker Marriott in downtown Lincoln. A video tribute to the late Bill Smith, founder and owner of Speedway Motors, preceded the banquet.

Speedway Motors is title sponsor of IMCA Weekly Racing and company President Clay Smith also spoke prior to the start of the evening’s festivities.

Friday’s Champions’ Reception, at the Smith Collection Museum of American Speed, on the Speedway Motors campus, again saw attendance of almost 400.
