WAKEENEY, KS (April 27)—Colby’s Jeff Tubbs visited the Jason Oil winner’s circle twice Sunday evening, April 27, at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway.

The IMCA Stock Car and Modified divisions ran two features from a rain shortened program on April 6.

In the makeup IMCA stock car feature, Shannon Maughlin took the early lead, trailed by Michael Meyer, Eric Kinderknecht and Jeff Tubbs.  But on lap 8, Tubbs took a lead he would not relinquish enroute to the win.  Maughlin chased Tubbs but settled for second, followed by Jason Rogers, B.J. Wagoner and Nick Tubbs.

In the night’s regular feature, Jason Davis got out front at the drop of the green, followed by Maughlin and Kinderknecht.  Maughlin passed Davis on the following lap, and led through lap 9 as Jeff Tubbs took the lead at the halfway mark.  Maughlin regained the lead on lap 14 and looked to be on his way to a win, but Jeff Tubbs made a late race move to score his second win of the night and third of the weekend after winning at RPM Speedway in Hays Saturday night.  Maughlin had to settle for the runner-up spot for the second time, with Kinderknecht, Chad Sterling and Davis rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners were Rogers and Jeff Tubbs.

In the IMCA Modified makeup feature, Brian Calhoon took the early lead over hometown driver Kyle Rohleder.  But Rohleder took over the top spot on lap 4 and never looked back on his way to the checkers.  Clay Sellard, David Murray, Calhoon, and Cody Gearhart completed the top five.

In the regular feature, Michael Wadel of Dodge City led all 20 laps to make his way to victory lane.  A late race caution set up a green-white-checkered finish, but Wadel was able to hold off Nate Moore, Rohleder, ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick and Jason Schoenberger for the win.  Murray, Schoenberger and Travis Sherfick were victorious in the three heat races.

In the IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event, Kaid Calhoon led the first 7 laps before the lone caution of the 15-lap event flew when Brian Conness dropped a driveshaft.  After the restart, Daniel Gottschalk of Ellis got past Calhoon for the lead.  Gottschalk was able to beat Calhoon to the checkers for the win, with Blaine Walt third, Clay ‘The Money Man’ Money fourth and Cory Struckhoff fifth.  Heat race winners included Calhoon, Walt and Struckhoff.

H.J. Colburn was the early leader in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature until his car came to a stop on the back straightaway on lap 7.  Heat two winner Garrett ‘The Wild Child’ Hager of Hays inherited the lead on the restart, followed by Colton Pfeifer and Travis Coop.  A spin on lap 14 brought out a caution and set up a green-white-checkered finish.  Hager was able to hold off ‘Bam Bam’ Cody Graham to score the win, with heat three winner Colin Heim, Pfeifer and Coop rounding out the top five.  Colburn won the other heat race.

After a lap one crash in the 10-lap IMCA Sport Compact feature, heat one winner Kiowa Higdon of Hays took the lead and drove off to score his second victory of the weekend.  Kirk Pfannenstiel reeled in Higdon late in the race but came up a little short, trailed by heat two victor Michael Smith, Art Herzog and Madison Reed.

The evening’s race sponsor was Wheatbelt Distributors of Wakeeney.

All five classes will return to the 3/8-mile oval this Sunday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m.
