WaKEENEY, Kan. (May 26-27) – The first four events of the Dirt Track Central Goodland Machine Great Plains Series didn’t produce a repeat IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner.

The Memorial Weekend show at WaKeeney Speedway did.

Jeff Tubbs topped both Sunday and Monday $600 to win features and drove home the new tour point leader as well.

Sunday’s 20-lapper went caution-free and Tubbs, Angel Munoz and four-time national champion Mike Nichols put on a racing clinic up front.

Nichols led the first five laps before Tubbs made the pass for the lead. Tubbs, Munoz and Nichols raced side-by-side and nose-to-tail the entire distance with Tubbs holding on for the win over Munoz and Nichols. Tyler Tipton and Nick Tubbs completed the top five.

On Memorial Day evening, Jason Rogers led early on before Jeff Tubbs took over in a caution plagued contest. The race was checkered after 13 laps due to the time limit and Tubbs made his second appearance of the weekend in victory lane. Josh Hudson captured the runner-up spot, followed by Kyle Clough, Nick Tubbs and B.J. Wagoner.

Jason Schoenberger captured the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature on Sunday after passing leader Nate Moore midway through the 20-lap race. Moore held on for second at the finish, followed by Travis Sherfick, Cody Gearhart and Corey Lagroon.

On Monday, Sherfick put on a show for the hometown fans. Sherfick did not finish his heat race and had to run the “B” feature. Sherfick finished fourth in the “B” and lined up 19th in the 20-car main event grid.

Matt Fabrizius led the opening lap but was passed on the following lap by Travis Simmons. The red flag flew on lap three when Kale Beavers rolled down the back straightaway. Beavers was OK but done for the night.

Simmons led the field back to green, then was passed on lap six by Brian Calhoon. After a caution on lap seven, Dylan Sherfick took over the top spot, only to go up in smoke a few laps later. Calhoon led the field at the halfway mark, then the elder Sherfick made his move and took the lead on lap 12 and led the remaining distance for the win.

Calhoon held on for second, trailed by Jerry Teel, 20th starting Rodger Peck and Fabrizius.

Trenton Kleweno of Hays led all 15 laps of the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature on Sunday. Chris Heim challenged the first half of the race and even passed Keim on lap three, only to have the caution fly and put him back to second on the restart. Kleweno pulled away the second half of the race for the win. Cory Struckhoff finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Andy Barton, Heim, and Blaine Walt.

Kleweno backed up that win with a repeat visit to victory lane on Monday. Kleweno passed Barton on lap nine and held off Struckhoff for the second night in a row to the checkers. Walt was third, Clay Sellard fourth and Heim fifth.

Jason McIntyre took the lead at the drop of the green in Sunday’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock feature and led the first 13 laps, only to be passed by Cody Graham with two laps to go. Graham took the checkers ahead of McIntyre, Garrett Hager, Brian Stich and Leon Pfannenstiel.

Graham won again on Monday night in much the same fashion. Colton Pfeifer led the opening lap before giving way to Colin Heim. Then on lap 13, Stich passed Heim for the lead down the backstretch, but drifted high in turn three.

Graham then made his winning move under Heim, who also got high in the corner, and drove on to make it two wins in a row. Heim recovered to finish second, with Daniel Irwin, Colton Pfeifer and Jacob Crowell rounding out the top five.
