West Burlington, IA (Saturday, June 24, 2017) – You would have thought that on Saturday, June 24th at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa it was late April instead of late June, as cool temperatures greeted the fans and drivers on Mid-Season Championship Night. Ricks Sales & Service and Mountain Dew helped to bring $5 Fan Appreciation Night, with 111 cars singing in to due battle in front of a packed grandstands. At the end of the night two drivers picked up their first wins of the season at the track, while four others earned repeat wins.

Twenty-four Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMods took to the track first for their 15 lap feature, with Sean Wyett and Jake Morris drawing the front row. Wyett would take advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Bobby Anders and Austen Becerra. While Wyett paced the field out front, the battle was for the runner up spot between Anders, Becerra, Morris and John Oliver Jr. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 6, when Dustin Ravelin spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Jacob Whittington spun down the backstretch and collected Ravelin to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Wyett jump back out front, with Becerra and Oliver Jr. close behind. One lap later, lap 8, the action was slowed for the third time, as Cody Layman spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Wyett once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Oliver Jr. and Morris slipping past Becerra for second and third. But just as the lap was scored complete the fourth and final caution of the race appeared, as Jonathan Williams spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Wyett moved back out front, with Oliver Jr. and Morris following. Oliver Jr. would try the top, while Morris worked the bottom to try and get by Wyett for the lead over the final laps. But Wyett was able to hold them off to claim his second win of the season at 34 Raceway. Oliver Jr. settled for 2nd, Morris was 3rd, Becerra was 4th, with Anders coming home in 5th.

Up next was the 15 lap Deery Brothers IMRA Midget feature, with Jeremy Hull and Dillon Morley drawing the front row for the event. But it was fourth place starter Jacob Sollenberger who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Hull and Chase McDermand. The lead for Sollenberger only lasted for one lap, as McDermand used the top of the track coming out of turn 4 to take the top spot away on lap 2. Then Adam Taylor, who was working the bottom, slipped under McDermand coming off turn 4 on lap 4 to grab the lead away. McDermand would stay glued to Taylor’s back bumper over the final laps, but wasn’t able to mount a challenge to get the lead back. As Taylor went on to become the first repeat winner of the season at the track in five feature races. McDermand was 2nd, Sollenberger was 3rd, Hull was 4th, with Brent Burrows rounding out the top 5.

Tanner Gebhardt and Shane Quam led the field of twenty-four WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprints to green for their 20 lap feature, with Quam moving out front to lead lap 1 over Matt Krieger and Gebhardt. While Quam worked the bottom of the track, Krieger went to the middle to try and get the lead away. The leaders started to enter lapped traffic on lap 8, which allowed Krieger to grab the lead. But before the lap was scored complete the first yellow of the race appeared. Devon Rouse spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow, and handed the lead back over to Quam for the restart. On the restart Damian Getchell rolled off turn 1 to bring out the red. He would climb from his car okay. The following restart saw Quam jump back out front, with Krieger and Gebhardt close behind. Once again Krieger worked the middle to the top of the track to try and grab the lead away from Quam over the next 5 laps. Just as Krieger made the pass for the lead on lap 14, another caution came out before the lap was scored complete and handed the lead back over to Quam. This time Travis Pence slowed to a stop in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. Quam jumped back out front on the restart, with Krieger and Gebhardt still close behind. Krieger finally made the pass on Quam for the lead on lap 17, and then 1 lap later, lap 18, the final caution of the race came out to set up a 2 lap dash to the finish. On the restart Krieger jumped out front, as Gebhardt got by Quam for second. But there wasn’t enough laps for Gebhardt to challenge Krieger for the lead, as he went on to score his first win of the season at 34 Raceway. Gebhardt settled for 2nd, Donnie Steward started 6th and finished 3rd, Jarrod Schneiderman came from 11th to finish in 4th, with Quam holding on for 5th.

The scheduled 20 lap Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modified feature was up next, with Dennis LaVeine and Dean McGee leading the field to the drop of the green flag. LaVeine would take advantage of his draw to grab the lead on lap 1 over McGee and Stephan Kammerer. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 5, when Dugan Thye, who was running 5th, spun in turn 2 and collected Mitch Boles to bring out the yellow. On the restart Chadwick Giberson spun in turn 4 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw LaVeine move back out front, with Brandon Rothzen, who started 8th, moving into second. Just after lap 6 was scored complete another caution came out, as Darrow Lillie spun in turn and collected Robert Thompson to bring out the yellow. LaVeine once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Rothzen and Kammerer close behind. Just as LaVeine started to put a little distance between him and Rothzen, another caution appeared on lap 9 to slow the action. This time Lille spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Rothzen was able to get under LaVeine coming off turn 4 to grab the top spot away on lap 10. Then just after the lap was scored complete another caution came out. James Raleigh would spin in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Rothzen moved back out front on the restart, with LaVeine and Bill Roberts Jr., who started 11th, following. Going into turn 1 on lap 14 Rothzen went high to clear a lapped car, but ran out of track and spun off turn 2 to bring out the final yellow of the race. This also brought the feature to the time limit, and set up a green-white-checkered finish. LaVeine inherited the lead on the restart, with Kammerer and Mitch Morris, who started 6th, over taking Roberts Jr. for second and third. Neither driver was able to mount a challenge on LaVeine over the final lap, as he held on to claim his first win of the season at the track. Kammerer was 2nd, Morris was 3rd, Roberts Jr. was 4th, with Tony VonDresky coming from 12th to finish in 5th.

John Oliver Jr. and Ray Raker drew the front row for the 20 lap Pepsi IMCA Stock Car feature, with Oliver Jr. grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Raker and Jason Cook. Oliver Jr. then held the lead until lap 5, when Cook slipped under him to take over the top spot. While the battle for the lead went two and three wide, Tom Bowling Jr., who started 9th, went to the top of the track to work his way into the battle. Bowling Jr. would use the momentum off the top to edge out Cook at the line to lead lap 8. Then one lap later, lap 9, Cook slowed in turn 4 with a right rear flat to bring out the first caution and ended his run up front. On the restart Bowling Jr. moved back out front, with Jason See, who started 10th in his first ever appearance at the track, edging Oliver Jr. out for second. Bowling Jr. continued to lead the field, as the battle for second heated up between See, David Brandies, who started 8th, Oliver Jr., and Dane Fenton. The action up front was slowed for the second time, as Jake Wenig spun off turn 1 with a right rear flat on lap 14 to bring out the yellow. Bowling Jr. once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Brandies and See close behind. Brandies would slip under Bowling Jr. coming off turn 4 to take the lead away on lap 17. But Bowling Jr. would get back under Brandies coming off turn 2 to take the lead back on lap 18. Then just after the completion of lap 18 the final caution came out, as Wenig spun in turn 4 for his second solo caution to end his night. Once again Bowling Jr. jumped out front on the restart and then held on over the final 2 laps to claim his third win of the season at 34 Raceway. Brandies was 2nd, See was 3rd, Fenton was 4th, with Michael Larsen coming from 12th to round out the top 5.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 12 lap Sonny’s Market 4-Cylinders, with Kimberly Abbott and Will Calhoun drawing the front row. Abbott would take advantage of her starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Darin Weisinger Jr. and Cody Bowman. While Abbott set the fast pace out front, Brandon Lambert, who started 10th, was working his way towards the front. But without a caution there was no catching Abbott on this night, as she picked up her third win of the season at the track. Weisinger Jr. held off Lambert to finish 2nd, David Prim started 8th and finished 4th, with Bowman coming home in 5th.
