LUEDTKE HOLDS OFF PLUMMER FOR HAWKEYE DOWNS MODIFIED WIN DALLAS CHANDLER CLAIMS HORNET FEATURE

Cedar Rapids, IA (June 21, 2013)- All six divisions of the Hy-Vee/I-Wireless Championship Series were back in action at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night June 21  as Van Meter Inc. presented their annual race night for charity. The admission price was whatever fans cared to donate. This year Van Meter designated the Mercy Women’s Center as their charity of choice with the emphasis on using the money raised to help cancer victims with costs that insurance normally doesn’t cover such as wigs, hats, scarves, gas cards, parking fees, etc.

The Van Meter Celebrity Legends Race also returned to the track with Van Meter COO Lura McBride, CBS2/ Fox 28 News Anchor Tiffany O’Donnell, Lindsey McGrath of the McGrath auto Group, and Clare Duffy of Z102.9 running fifteen laps for charity. McBride took the win after taking the lead from early leader Tiffany O’Donnell. Lindsey McGrath tried to use the outside groove to make a pass with five laps to go but couldn’t draw close enough for a pass. While Clare Duffy finished last she kept the fans entertained with a pair of spins including one on the last lap. With University of Iowa mascot Herky the Hawk in the flagstand, the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks took the green for their feature. Matt Lacoursiere led the early laps and did everything he could to hold off Matt Petrzelka but Petrzelka got the upper hand eventually taking the point and the win adding to his five wins already earned this season. Jacob Floyd finished third behind Lacouirsiere in just his second appearance of the season. Jeremy Robbins finished fourth in his first appearance of 2013 and Matt Sherman finished fifth.

In Mountain Dew Sportsmen, the end result was still Dave McCalla winning the 20-lap feature but it certainly wasn’t as easy as it has been in previous weeks. McCalla led every lap but faced heavy pressure early from Greg Hentrich and Cory Houdek. At the halfway mark Ben Glascock was glued to the rear bumper of McCalla and trying to find a way around the defending champion McCalla. Repeated attempts using both the low and high groove were thwarted by McCalla and  Glascock had to settle for second. Houdek, the only other driver to win a feature in the division so far this season finished third. Jim hanson brought home fourth and Greg Hentrich crossed the stripe in fifth. The Dublin City Pub Legends feature was an absolutely wild affair featuring four-wide racing at times with the leaderboard changing on every lap. Caleb Adrian bolted to the early lead leading a pack of as many as five cars within striking distance of the lead. The caution flag weighed heavily on the outcome of the race with the first yellow waving on lap three after Cole O’Brien spun. Caution slowed the action again on lap fourteen, as Matt Blake was trying for the lead. Blake “wheel-hopped” a slower car trying to make the pass after he ran out of real estate. Point Leader Kevin Korsmo took command on the restart  with Tim Goettsch slipping into second and charging toward the leader. Five laps later Goettsch grabbed the point from Korsmo but he wasn’t ready to concede the win to Goettsch and fought back. With two laps remaining and Korsmo trying everything to get alongside Goettsch he lost the handle and spun exiting turn two. Korsmo appeared to maintain his momentum but officials had already thrown the yellow which meant he would have to move to the rear of the field on the restart.

Goettsch wasn’t seriously challenged on the restart  as he recorded his third win of the 2013 campaign. Bryce Bailey crossed the stripe in second while Kyle Diercks was third in his first visit to the track.

Ryan Luedtke led a “Norway Trifecta” to the finish line in the Miller Time Modifieds as he held off a very determined Tim Plummer for the win.  Luedtke pounced on the lead and built an early lead but by lap eight the front five had moved into a nearly nose-to-tail formation with Brian Gibson, Tim Plummer, Mike Schulte, and Jim Dixon running in that order.  While Luedtke did stretch his lead a bit with five laps to go Plummer was knocking on the back door and trying to figure out whether high or low was the way to go.

With three laps remaining the pair were running side-by side and they stayed that way to the checkered flag with Luedtke winning by less than three feet. Mike Schulte finished in third behind Plummer with Gibson and Dixon filling out the top of the order.

After a messy looking start, Dallas Chandler blasted into the lead from the fourth row but the lead was short-lived as caution waved on lap two. When green flag racing resumed on a restart that was about as messy as the start of the race, Chandler went back to the business of widening his lead. By the halfway mark Kurt Bohnsack had thwarted any thoughts Chandler may have had for an easy win and  was in a position to challenge for the lead.  Bohnsack motored around Chandler on lap eleven but Chandler fought back and regained the lead one lap later.

One lap after that, which was lap thirteen of the scheduled twenty-lap feature, Bohnsack returned the favor and regained the lead but his shot at victory took a hit one lap later when Chandler forged back into the lead. That would prove to be the winning pass as Bohnsack couldn’t mount another charge. Todd Ness crossed the stripe in third while Jeff Dvorak was fourth and Jose DeJesus finished fifth.

The Carpetland USA Late Model feature was suspended after eighteen laps and the entire feature will be re-run on Friday, June 28. On lap eighteen the car of Chad Siems developed problems and dumped fluid on the racing surface as well as catching fire briefly as the fluid hit the hot engine. After a lengthy clean-up it was determined that the track was still not in race condition and officials opted to suspend the race rather than forcing a long delay while more clean-up efforts were happening.

Racing action continues Friday June 28 with all six divisions in action for Union Night at the Races. The Capetland USA Late Models are also scheduled to run double-features.
