Columbus Junction, IA (Friday, June 10, 2016) – To say it was a hot one Friday night at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction, Iowa can be an understatement, as temperatures hoovered around the low 90’s with heat indexes close to 100. The “4th Annual Tim Sands Memorial”, which was presented by Simply Soothing, Bug Soother, and Tyson Fresh Meats Employees, was on tap for the night. As the winner of the Modified feature took home a top prize of $555 in honor of Tim Sands number he raced in the division.

The 8 lap Kemper Trucking CJ Mini Hauler feature was the first to take to the track, with Drake Fenton and Jerad Ruble leading the field to the green flag. But it was third place starter Billy Stanford who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Jacob Brown, who started 5th, and Brian Tipps. While Stanford set the pace out front, Fenton worked himself into the runner up spot on lap 5 and then went to work on Stanford for the top spot. But Stanford was able to hold off Fenton to claim his second win of the season at the track. Fenton was 2nd, Tipps was 3rd, Brown was 4th, with Ruble rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 15 lap Tyson Fresh Meats SportMod feature, with Jared Miller and Troy Hovey drawing the front row for the event. On the drop of the green third place starter Brett Lowry grabbed the lead over Colton Livezey and Miller. While Lowry started to pull away from the field, the battle for the runner up spot heated up between Livezey, Hovey and Troy Philpott, who started 8th. A late race caution on lap 11 would bring the field back to Lowry’s back bumper for the restart. On that restart Lowry moved back out front, but now had Hovey glued to his back bumper. Lowry was able to hold off Hovey over the final 4 laps to pick up his fifth win in a row at the track. Hovey was 2nd, Philpott was 3rd, Livezey was 4th, with Miller coming home in 5th.

Jake Benischek and John Whalen led the field to green in the 12 lap Louisa Communications IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Benischek moving out front on the start over Daniel Campbell and Whalen. With Benischek out front, Campbell was working to hold off Brendon Schultheis for the runner up spot. At the same time Bill Whalen Jr., who started 10th, and Wayne Noble, who started 7th, were working their way into the battle. But without any late race caution, Benischek would go on to claim his first win of the season at the track. Schultheis won the battle for 2nd, Campbell was 3rd, Whalen Jr. was 4th, with Cody VanDusen coming from 18th to round out the top 5.

The 10 lap Mod Lite feature was next to take to the track, with Michael Dominguez and Robert Guss making up the front row. But it was third place starter Wyatt Wilkerson who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Dominguez and Brad Lucy. Wilkerson then held the top spot until lap 4, when Lucy slipped by for the lead. Lucy then pulled away over the final 6 laps to score his third win in a row at the track. Newcomer Andrew Smith came from 5th to finish 2nd, Wilkerson was 3rd, Dominguez was 4th, with Guss coming home in 5th.

Johnathan Huston and Johnny Walker Jr. drew the front row for the 16 lap P&L Transportation Modified feature. But Colt Mather, who started 3rd, jumped out front on lap 1 over Walker Jr. and Kurt Kile, who started 5th. While Mather set the pace out front, Walker Jr. and Kile battled for the runner up spot. Kile would over take Walker Jr. for the second spot on the lap 4 restart, and then followed in Mather’s tire tracks. Despite a second caution, Mather was able to hold on to pick up his second win in a row at the track and the $555 top prize to go with it. Kile settled for 2nd, Dan Albright came from 7th to finish 3rd, Brandon Banks finished 4th after starting in 11th, with Dugan Thye coming from 12th to finish in 5th.

Travis Finke took advantage of being moved to the pole for the Kauffman Electric IMCA Stock Car feature, when Jordan Gerling elected to go to the tail, to lead lap 1 over Billy Faler and Adam Bell. Finke then held the top spot for 1 lap, as Bell slipped by on lap 2 to take over the lead. The action up front was slowed for the first and only time on lap 3, as Gerling spun in turn 2. On the restart Bell moved back out front, with Tad Payne, who started 7th, and Kirk Kinsley, who started 9th, close behind. While Bell and Payne worked the bottom of the track, Kinsley went to the middle to make it a three car battle for the top spot. Coming to complete lap 10, Payne would slip under Bell to grab the lead away, leaving Bell and Kinsley to battle for the runner up spot. Payne then held on over the final 5 laps to score his first win of the season at the track. Kinsley won the battle for 2nd, Bell was 3rd, Todd Reitzler started 12th and finished 4th, with Shane Paris finishing fifth after starting in 13th.
