West Burlington, IA (Saturday, May 27, 2017) – The double header weekend at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa kicked off on Saturday, May 27th, with Fleck Sales $5 Fan Appreciation Night. A very large crowd on hand got to witness some great racing, with four driver’s winner their first of the season at the track and another scoring his third of the season at the track.

The first feature to take to the track was the 15 lap Casebine Credit Union IMCA SportMods, with Randy LaMar and Travis Hartman leading the field to green. Hartman would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over John Oliver Jr., who started 6th, and Jacob Whittington. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 2, when Austen Becerra spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Hartman moved back out front, with Dan Keltner over taking Oliver Jr. for the runner up spot. One lap later, lap 4, LaMar would spin in turn 4 to bring out the second caution of the race. Sean Wyett, who started 7th, used the bottom of the track to take the top spot away from Hartman on the restart. Just as Wyett started to pull away from the battle behind him the third and final caution appeared on lap 8. This time Whittington slowed to a stop down the front stretch to bring out the yellow. Wyett jumped back out front on the restart, with Oliver Jr. moving back into second. Oliver Jr. tried to keep pace with Wyett, but Wyett would go on to claim his first win of the season at the track. Oliver Jr. was 2nd, Becerra recovered from his spin on lap 2 to come back up to finish 3rd, Kyle Hill started 9th and finished 4th, with Hartman coming home in 5th.

Up next was the 20 lap WT Gabeline & Sons Trucking 305 Sprint feature, with Matt Krieger and Rob Pohren on the front row. Krieger used his pole starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Nathan Murders and Pohren. The lead trio then started to pull away from the rest of the field, even entering lapped traffic by lap 9, until the first caution of the race appeared on lap 12 to bring the rest of the field back to their back bumper’s. Shane Quam would spin in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Before the field went back to green, leader Krieger pulled into the pits with troubles to hand the lead over to Murders on the restart. While Murders was out front, Pohren worked to hold back Nick Guernsey, who started 7th, for second. The action up front was brought to a halt on lap 17 when Travis Porter clipped a tire in turn 3 and got upside down to bring out the red. He would climb from his car okay. On the restart Murders moved back out front, with Guernsey using the top of the track to slip past Pohren for the runner up spot. Guernsey would then try to work around Murders on the top side of the track over the final 2 laps. But Murders was able to hold him off to pick up his first career 305 Sprint feature win. Guernsey finished 2nd, Ryan Jamison came from 8th to finish 3rd, Pohren finished a career best 4th, with Ben Wagoner finishing 5th after starting in 9th.

Dane Fenton and Cody Wshburne led the field to green in the 20 lap Pepsi IMCA Stock Car feature. But just as the green flag waved the caution light came on, as Tom Bowling Jr. slowed to a stop in turn 2 with a right front flat. On the original restart Fenton grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Ray Raker and Jake Wenig. Raker would then look under Fenton over the next 3 laps, when the second and final caution of the race appeared. This time debris down the front stretch brought out the yellow. Fenton moved back out front on the restart, with Raker and John Oliver Jr., who started 8th, close behind. Fenton, who was working the top, Raker, who was in the middle, and Oliver Jr., who was on the bottom, raced laps 8,9 and 10 three wide for the lead, with Fenton holding the top spot at the line each lap. That was until lap 11 when Oliver Jr. was able to clear both Fenton and Raker coming off turn 4 to take over the lead. Oliver Jr. then pulled away over the final laps to score his second win in a row and third overall at 34 Raceway. Wenig got past Fenton late in the race to finish 2nd, Fenton held on for 3rd, Dean Kratzer started 11th and finished 4th, with Raker rounding out the top 5.

Twenty-one Victory Lane Suspensions IMCA Modifieds were set to take to the track next for their 20 lap feature, with Dean McGee and Rich Smith making up the front row. Smith used his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over McGee and Bill Roberts Jr. George Spence III worked the top of the track to work himself into second on lap 2 and then went to work on Smith for the lead. But the action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 7, when Derrick Stewart spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Roberts Jr. used the bottom of the track to go from third to first, with Spence III slipping past Smith for second. Spence III’s run up front came to an end on lap 13 when he got into Brandon Rothzen, who started 7th and was running 3rd, in turn 4, which caused both to spin in turn 4 to bring out the second and final caution of the race. Roberts Jr. moved back out front on the restart, with Colby Springsteen, who started 8th, and Kevin Kile, who started 9th, close behind. Springsteen, who was working the top of the track, tried to get past Roberts Jr., who was on the bottom, over the next 3 laps, but Roberts Jr. was able to hold him off. Then on lap 17 Springsteen went to the bottom to try and get under Roberts Jr. coming off turn 4, but once again Roberts Jr. was able to hold him off. Coming to the white flag Springsteen went back to the top of the track to try and get past Roberts Jr. But Roberts Jr. was able to hold him off to pick up his first win of the season at 34 Raceway. Springsteen settled for 2nd, Kile was 3rd, Dennis LaVeine was 4th, with Dakota Hayden coming from 14th to round out the top 5.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 12 lap Sonny’s Market 4-Cylinders, with Alex Hayes and Cody VanDusen leading the field to green. VanDusen took advantage of his starting spot to jump out front on lap 1 over Ron Kibbe and Hayes. Kibbe tried to work under VanDusen, until lap 2 when he got sideways in turn 2 and fell to the back of the field. This would allow VanDusen to pull away from the battle behind him. Without a caution there was no catching VanDusen on this night, as he cruised to his first win of the season at the track. Brandon Lambert, who started 8th, edged out Kimberly Abbott, who started 9th, for 2nd, Hayes was 4th, with David Prim coming home in 5th.

Coming up next at 34 Raceway is the final night of the double header weekend, as Sunday, May 28th will feature the second stop of the season by the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders. Also in action on the night will be the Sunoco Fuels Mod Lites, IMRA Midgets, Crazy Coyote Min Hauler Trucks, Vintage Sprints and Vintage Super Modifieds.

Pit gates will open at 4 PM, the grandstands at 5 PM, hot laps at 6:15 PM, and racing at 7 PM. Grandstand admission will be $18 for adults and seniors (60+), students will be $12, and kids 10 & under FREE! Pit passes will be $35.
