Phillips, Liles, Thrasher, and Slaughter Score Peterson Memorial Wins at Eldon Raceway

Eldon, IA (Saturday, September 6, 2014) – Saturday night the Eldon Raceway in Eldon, IA held their 16th Annual running of the Michael Peterson Memorial. In action on the night was the Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts.
The first feature to take to the track was the 14 lap SportMods, with Michael Guthrie and Derek Liles drawing the front row for the event. Liles would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Brandon Dale and Charlie Weber, who started 6th. While Liles continued to lead, Dale had to work to hold off Weber in the battle for second. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 6, when Danny Brau got into the wall in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Liles moved back out front, with Dale and Weber continuing there battle for the runner up spot. Weber would slip past Dale for second on lap 10 and then went to work on Liles for the lead, that was until lap 12. Weber would get into the wall off turn 4 and slowed down the front stretch, which caused sixth place runner Rich Vogt to get into the back of him and spin in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. Liles once again moved out front on the restart, with Dakota Simmons over taking Dale for the second spot. Despite Liles slipping high in turn 4 on the final lap that allowed Dale to get under him off turn 4, Liles was able to hold on to pick up his first career SportMod feature win. Dale settled for 2nd, Simmons was 3rd, Ryan Fullenkamp came from 12th to finish in 4th, with Austin Paul finishing in 5th after starting in 10th.
Up next was the 14 lap Hobby Stock feature, with Danny Thrasher and Troy Phillips leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Thrasher would jump out front on lap 1 over Craig Brown and Phillips. While Thrasher worked to hold off Brown for the lead, Kim Spees, who started 7th, Mike Hughes, who started 9th, and Aaron Martin had a tight battle going for third. Brown tried to slip under Thrasher over the 11 laps, as Hughes slipped into third and tried to chase down the front runners. But without a caution Thrasher was able to hold on to claim the win. Brown was 2nd, Hughes was 3rd, Martin was 4th, with Spees coming home in 5th.
Kassidy Kirkpatrick and Matt Moore drew the front row for the 10 lap Sport Compact feature, with Moore grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Matt Girdley and Shawn Slaughter, who started 5th. Just as lap 1 was scored complete the red light would come on, as Billy Cain rolled in turn 3 and collected Kevin Kirkpatrick to bring out the red. Cain would climb from his car okay. On the restart Slaughter went three wide to grab the lead away, while Girdley followed him into second. Slaughter then started to pull away from the field, when another red appeared on lap 6. This time Richard Bank rolled in turn 3 to bring out the red. He too climbed from his car okay. Slaughter once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Josh Barnes, who started 6th, over taking Girdley for the runner up spot. Slaughter would hold on over the final 4 laps to pick up the win. Barnes was 2nd, Girdley was 3rd, Trent Orwig was 4th, with Barry Taft coming from 10th to round out the top 5.
The final feature to take to the track was the 16 lap Stock Cars, with Les Blakley and Todd Phillips making up the front row for the event. Phillips would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Blakley and Tyler McClure. Blakley tried to work under Phillips for the lead over the next 4 laps, when the first and only caution of the race appeared on lap 5. Lane Kauffman came to a stop against the wall in turn 3 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Phillips jumped back out front, with Blakley and McClure close behind. While Phillips worked to hold off Blakley and McClure, Corey Stout and Corey Strothman, who started 12th, was battling for the fourth spot. Despite a few contacts from Blakley, who was trying to work under Phillips, over the final laps, Phillips was able to hold on to claim the win. Blakley settled for 2nd, McClure was 3rd, Strothman won the battle for 4th, with Stout coming home in 5th.
The Eldon Raceway has one more race left on there 2014 schedule, that being next Saturday night September 13th. In action on that night will be the Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. Gates will open at 4:00 pm, with hot laps at 6:30 pm, and racing to follow.
