DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 18, 2017) – Just one week before the 2017 Season Championships, the racing action was intense at the Davenport Speedway Friday night. Wrecked racecars and last lap passes kept fans on the edge of their seats all night long.

Matt Ryan drew the pole for the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature and drove out to a sizeable lead. However in lapped traffic, Spencer Diercks was able to run down the leader. Diercks was able to drive around Ryan on the highside on lap 22. In the final corner, Ryan pulled a massive slide job to retake the lead. Diercks tried to crossover, but could not complete the move soon enough.

The win was Ryan’s fifth of the season and third straight. Second went to Spencer Diercks, ahead of Jonathan Brauns in third. Andy Nezworski  and Chuck Hanna rounded out the top five.

Hanna and Brauns were late model heat winners.

Rob Toland outlasted the field in the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modified feature. Toland started on the pole and led all twenty laps, despite a heavy dose of caution flags. Point leader Bryce Garnhart ran second the entire race. Eric Barnes raced to a third place finish. Milo Veloz was fourth, but was light at the scales, giving that position to Greg Durbin. Doug Crampton was credited with fifth. The victory was Toland’s fourth modified win of the season at Davenport and third straight.

Modified heat winners were Stephan Kammerer, Eric Barnes, and Milo Veloz Jr.

Yellow fever gripped the Koehler Electric Street Stock main. Several multi-car incidents trimmed the field to only six cars that reached the checkered flag. Nick Hixson held the early lead until he brought out the caution flag just after midway. On the restart, Jesse Owen took the lead. Owen would lead until the final lap, when Jeff Struck Jr. dove to the inside in turn one and came out of two with the lead. Struck would win by a fender with Owen a close second. Nick Hisxon fought back from his miscue to take third. Gene Ehlers and Brian Wiseman were fourth and fifth respectively.

Gage Neal led the first ten laps of the Hawkeye Auto SportMod feature. However a lap eleven restart allowed Dustin Schram to take the lead. Two laps later Neal went back in front. On the following lap, contact between Schram and Neal would end both drivers race. That gave the race lead to Tony Olson. Olson managed to hold off Kelly Meyer in the final two laps for his seventh feature win this season and third straight. Meyer took second with Keith Blum third. Doug Burkhead recovered from an early caution to finish fourth. Jake Morris completed the first five.

Next Friday, August 25th will be Season Championship night at the Davenport Speedway. Track titles will be on the line in all four weekly classes. The American Iron Racing Series will also be racing that night. Time permitting, we will also have Mechanic Races.
