Zeitner Ends Cooney’s Streak at 5
Story by Josh Reynolds

STUART, IA (August 19) – Racers and fans returned to Stuart Speedway for the 13th race of this quickly ending summer looking to see some good quality racing, and GREAT quality racing is what they found! Cole Ferguson, Marcus Fagan, Jordan Peters, Josh Gilman, John Watson, Al Zeitner and Andy Forcht were the winners on Ganoe Excavating Night at the Races.

First up for the night was the IMCA Northern Sportmods with Cole Ferguson and Austin Paul on the front row. Ferguson would lead early with Ty Luellen and Paul close behind. Paul would lose third to Clint Luellen on lap four as Ferguson continued to lead. A lap six caution tightened up the field and put the Luellen brothers side by side for the restart behind Ferguson. Clint would be first behind Ferguson with Ty close behind in third until the cars came across the line to take the white flag when Ty moved by Clint for second. A car that spun in turn three brought the race to a close with the yellow/checkered as Ferguson picked up his second win in as many weeks. Ty Luellen finished second with Clint Luellen third, Nick Roberts fourth and Mike Pruitt fifth. Ferguson and Ty Luellen were the heat race winners. Roberts holds a 23 point lead over Pruitt.

Next up was the IMCA Stock Cars with Derrick Rohe and Robert Stofer on the front row. Rohe led early with Stofer and Jeff Anderson close behind. Stofer moved past Rohe to lead lap five with Rohe coming back around to lead lap six. Stofer took over for good on lap seven with Anderson settling into second on lap eight. That didn’t last long as Marcus Fagan took second from Anderson on lap ten. Fagan set out after Stofer, and four laps later took over the lead as Stofer faded with a flat tire. From then on the race was for second as Fagan powered ahead with Anderson and Brian Blessington fighting for the runner up position. Fagan took the win, his third of the year. Anderson finished second with Blessington third, Jeff Joldersma fourth and Rohe fifth. Rohe and Stofer were the heat race winners. After the feature, Michael Walrod claimed Joldersma’s shocks. Fagan holds an 8 point lead over Joldersma and 11 over Blessington.

IMCA Sport Compacts came out next with Nash Coe and Jordan Peters showing the way. Coe led lap one with Peters taking over on lap two. Peters would lead to the finish, taking his sixth win of the year over Cody Bristow, Scott Brown and Coe. Coe was the heat race winner and Peters is your track champion for the year, holding a 162 point lead over Brown.

Ed Seibert and Tony Hilgenberg brought out the IMCA Modifieds next for their twenty lap feature. Seibert led lap one with Rex Parkison moving by to lead lap two. Josh Gilman took over the lead on lap four and looked to run away with the race, but Josh Most had something to say about that, chasing down Gilman and passing for the top spot on lap seven. Gilman searched around and found a line that worked, catching back up with Most and drawing even on lap fifteen and taking the lead back on lap sixteen. Most would fight back and as the cars took the white flag, Most dove low and spun around in turn one, drawing the caution flag to end the race with a yellow/checkered, giving Gilman his fifth win of the year. Devon Havlik crossed in second with Kyle Brown third, Alison Davidson fourth and Parkison fifth. Havlik and Gilman were the heat race winners. Gilman will be the track champion just by starting the race next week as he holds a 37 point lead over Davidson.

IMCA Hobby Stocks came out next with Gina Greubel and Nathan Lange on the front row. Lange led early with first Bill Atcheson and then Austin Luellen giving chase in second. Lange would hold strong at the front with the battle being for second between Luellen and John Watson. Watson won that spot on lap seven. Lange held the top spot for one more lap until Watson moved by on the bottom side to take the lead on lap nine. Brandon Pruitt jumped past Lange and Luellen to take second on lap ten and set out to chase down Watson as the laps wound down. Pruitt got to the bumper of Watson, but that would be as close as he could get as Watson took his fourth win of the year. Pruitt finished second with Luellen third, Jason Kohl fourth and Jamie Songer fifth. Watson and Kohl were the heat race winners. Pruitt holds just a 5 point lead over Watson, our closest point race going into season championship night.

IMCA Late Models were up next with Randy Faux and Al Zeitner on the front row. This was the last race for the Late Models at Stuart this season, and it promised to be an exciting one! Zeitner led early with Darrell DeFrance in tow. A lap three spin by point leader Todd Cooney tightened up the field, but Zeitner held strong, leading at the half way point. Ryan Griffith went for a spin on lap fourteen, setting up a six lap dash to the finish between Zeitner, DeFrance and Cooney who was back up to third after restarting at the tail. Zeitner ran the bottom with DeFrance in the middle and Cooney scraping the mud off of the wall all the way around the track! DeFrance and Cooney tried everything, but they were no match for Zeitner on this night as the 76 put an end to the season-long domination of Cooney with his first win of the year. DeFrance crossed in second with Cooney third, Paul Glendenning fourth and Faux fifth. Zeitner and Cooney were the heat race winners and Cooney wrapped up the season championship by 17 points over Chad Cooney.

Jordan Peters and Scott Brown brought out the 6 Cylinder FWD’s next with Peters leading the first two laps of the feature. Andy Forcht, the heat race winner, moved by on lap three and went on to win his ninth feature of the season. Peters finished second with Brown third and Cody Bristow fourth. Forcht is the season champion with an insurmountable 84 point lead over Peters.

The last event for the night was a King of the Hill for the IMCA Northern Sportmods. Nine cars made the call and after all was said and done, Nick Roberts and Mike Pruitt were the two left standing. The two cars took the green flag with Roberts on the top side and Pruitt down low. Pruitt hung with Roberts until they took the white flag when Roberts pulled away to take the win and the $100 top prize.

We’d like to thank all who came out to support the race track on a beautiful Sunday evening. We’d especially like to thank the fans and drivers of the IMCA Late Models for giving us a chance this season. Hopefully you all had just as much fun as we did! Join us next week for Plowman & Stanley Trenching Night at the Races. This will be season championship night with a Stock Car, Modified, Mod Lite/Dwarf Car and 6 Cylinder FWD special being our last race of the year on September 2nd. See you there!
