Wild Night Wins To Davis, Kyle, Newton & Christy!

| June 23, 2012

KANSAS CITY, KS (June 22, 2012) – Johnsonville Brat Night at the races brought out a wild night of racing at Lakeside Speedway. It also turned out to be a great night of racing at Lakeside Speedway.

In a reversal of how the last few races have been at Lakeside, 3 of the 4 feature winners on Friday night were stepping into the Johnsonville Victory Lane for the first time. Kerry Davis (Modifieds), Ben Kyle (Grand Nationals) and Darrin Christy (Factory Stock) all worked their way to wins. Nick Newtwon (B Mods) was the only repeat winner on the night.
The first feature of the night was the Factory Stock feature. Each week this class is becoming more and more competitive.

Darrin Christy and Scotty Moore battled at the drop of the green flag for the top spot. These two drivers would go door-to-door for 7 laps. During those 7 laps, Nate Barnes, Marshall Jewett and Vic Tranckino were all getting ready to jump into the battle for the lead.

On lap number 8, Barnes, who started 8th in the feature, was knocking on Christy’s door looking for the lead. Just a couple of laps later, Moore, would move back into the 2nd place position. Late in the race it was anyone’s feature to win. A total of 8 cars had a legitimate shot at winning the feature.

With a couple of laps left to go in the feature, Scotty Moore got loose coming out of turn two and made contact with Caleb Mclellan. This transaction caused several drivers behind them to check up and lose their momentum. As the white flag displayed the feature would be decided by 4 cars.

Christy still had the lead, N. Barnes was now 2nd, 3rd was Jason Ryun, who started 9th, and holding onto 4th was Tranckino. As the group hit the backstretch coming to the checkers Barnes began to slow on the track, due to a flat tire. It took just enough away from Ryun and Tranckino and Christy sped off to his 1st win of the season and he was the 8th different winner. Christy, a fan favorite, had his supporters up on their feet cheering and screaming as he took in the win.

After 10 features this season, Lakeside has had 8 different winners in victory lane in the Factory Stocks. Ryun finished 2nd on the night, 3rd went to Tranckino as he started 12th, 4th went to Caleb Mclellan and rounding out the top 5 was Justin Seifert in 5th.

Nobody has their B Mod figured out like Nick Newton has his. Why shouldn’t Newton have his car figured out? After all he built the thing!

On Friday night, Newton made it two straight as he won the B Mod feature for the 2nd straight week.

Young, Adam Kates, started on the pole position. He would lead lap number 1, but from there he would hand the lead off to Luke Nieman. Nieman would hold on to the lead for only a few laps. On lap number 4, Newton drove on the high side to the lead exiting turn 4.

The laps raged on as Newton, who started 11th, sat at the front of the field. It looked as if he was going to run away with win #4 on the season. Newton couldn’t seem to shake Terry Bruner. Lap after lap, Bruner would try and keep pace with Newton. As the laps came winding down, Bruner’s momentum starting to pick up on the track.

It would be a Cheetah Chassis showdown on the last lap. Coming out of turn two Bruner had pulled up to Newton’s back bumper. As the two leaders went into turn 3 Bruner made his move on the low line. He would get door to door with Newton and heading out of 4 Bruner would slip enough to give Newton his 4th win of the season. The win would help maintain Newton’s lead in the B Mod points race.

Third place went to Nieman, Gene Claxton took home 4th and rounding out your top 5 was Jake Richards.

What didn’t happen in the Grand National feature on Friday night?

For the 1st half of the race it looked as if the battle up front only contained Mike Busby. Busby put up a solid lead, before his lead was wiped away by a yellow.

After the yellow the majority of the race was a 3 car battle up front. Gary Donaldson had built a nice lead, Darren Kling sat in the 2nd spot trying to find a way to get close to Donaldson and then there was Kelby Ostrander waiting in the wings. The top 3 drivers in the points were also the top 3 spots in the feature. Then things got really hairy on a 2nd try at a green, white, checkered.

On the restart both Kling and Ostrander got great runs at Donaldson. While they were heading to the white flag, Ostrander took the two leaders 3 wide. Upon exiting turn 4, Donaldson would make hard contact with Ostrander. Kling received the white flag first. Donaldson would bury it in deep and pulled the standard “slide job” on Ostrander. Running up and under on Donaldson gave Ostrander a good run down the back stretch. Not only did he get a good run on Donaldson, he mounted one against Kling.

Kling’s front left and Ostrander’s right rear made contact. Kling would spin and Ostrander ran into turn 3 with the lead. The lead for a millisecond that is. Donaldson would catch Ostrander going into the corner. The two would make contact as full speed and slide up and into the wall. Two cars looked badly damaged as they were hauled off the race track one at a time.

Ben Kyle would be the racer that saw an immediate dividend from the on track troubles. Kyle would be the leader on the next restart. Once the race went back to green it was Kyle, a former feature winner getting the win. Kyle would become the 5th different winner in the Grand National division.

Jim Baker rode to a 2nd place finish, 3rd was Chris Littrell, Mike Busby finished a solid 4th and in 5th was Eddie Ingram.

Kerry Davis would add another new face into victory lane in the Modified division.

Justin Johnson would jump out to the early lead. He wrestled the lead away from Kirby Steins on lap 2. Unfortunately for Johnson, the race had more laps scheduled. A yellow flag would bring Johnson’s lead down to nothing. At this point when the green flag waved on the field, Davis worked to the inside of Johnson and exiting turn number 4 he would have the lead.

Davis would go on to extend out his lead. He did a wonderful job working in and out of lapped traffic. After getting by Johnson, no other driver would mount a charge at Davis. His lead was just too strong without a caution. After a few bad weeks, Davis was happy to get back into victory lane and become the 5th different winner in the Modifieds.

Justin Johnson would finish in the runner-up spot, marching from 12th to 3rd in the main event was Darron Fuqua, Cody Agler finished out on a good night as well in 4th place and Mark Hoover had one of his best runs of the season finishing 5th.

Next week the action returns, June 29, 2012. Spectator gates open up at 5:00 p.m., hot laps 6:45 and the first race goes green at 7:30 p.m.
