Brian Brown – Eye on the Jackson Nationals and Moberly!

(Bill W) August 26, 2013 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team have another weekend in store with big money races on the line.  The Jackson Nationals is Friday and Saturday, and will host the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series.  Saturday’s $4,000 winner’s share plus other special events are planned over the two nights.  On Sunday, the Randolph County Speedway in Moberly, Missouri will also boast $4,000 to the winner in ASCS-Warrior region action.  Last Saturday, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver was the hard-charger in the feature at Knoxville Raceway, going from 19th to 6th.

Amongst the 32 cars at Knoxville Saturday, you timed in 2nd quick.

Fortunately, we’ve got the good Charlie Garrett engine and a Maxim chassis along with Pro Shocks, Vortex wings and Weld Wheels, so qualifying isn’t something we always worry about.  We have a good package to roll around there pretty well.

Disaster struck in the heat, and you crashed on the frontstretch.

I had a bad feeling about the heat.  I don’t know why.  With Ian (Madsen) and Terry (McCarl) in there fighting a points battle, I had a feeling something was going to happen.  I talked to my crew chief Chad (Morgan) beforehand, and we would have just been happy to get through it.  We didn’t.

What happened?

On the start, we didn’t make it 200 yards and I don’t know what happened in front of (Davey) Heskin, but he got on the brakes.  I got into him and Kaley Gharst got into the back of me and I got turned over.  It bent our car and tore some things up, and we weren’t even 200 yards down the front straightaway.  It could have been worse.  Thank goodness Kaley, Dakota Hendrickson, AJ Moeller and Austin McCarl were on their game behind us and they were able to dodge me.  I was cage-first against the oncoming traffic.  I thank those guys for being aware.

You made it back out for the B.

My guys went to work and did a heck of a job.  We had some mangled up stuff.  The frame was obviously bent and the front axle needed replaced.  We did the best we could with what we had to work with.  We were able to get it back out for the B and win it.

You started towards the tail of the A, and started moving forward.

We knew we had our work cut out for us starting 19th.  We were able to work our way through there.  The track was pretty tough.  There wasn’t a whole lot of passing.  A guy could work around the bottom pretty easy, so going around guys on the outside made it tough to pass.  As the night went on, it got wider.

You ended up sixth at the checkers.

I don’t really feel like we had a sixth place car, but some things happened towards the front at the end.  I guess overall, after the issue in the heat, coming back to finish sixth shows how strong a team we have.  I was proud of the job they did.

I know you can appreciate Bronson Maeschen’s track title at Knoxville.

I’d like to congratulate Bronson Maeschen on his championship.  Winning a race at Knoxville is a lot easier than winning a championship.  Winning a championship means you’ve been strong all year, didn’t have any failures and didn’t fall out.  I was there when he won his first race, and he’s worked really hard at it.  It’s something he and his team should be really proud of.

It’s a big weekend in Jackson and Moberly!

It’s always good to go to Jackson.  I think we’ve won the last two 360 races that we’ve run there.  We have a good package there.  The ASCS guys will be bringing their guns, along with all the others.  It won’t be a cakewalk.  I’ve said it before, but some of my best fans are at Jackson.  I’m looking forward to getting to Moberly on Sunday too.  It’s good the promoter put up the money.  Labor Day weekend has always been a big race weekend in central Missouri.  It was Sedalia back in the day, and Lake Ozark more recently.  Hopefully, the fans and drivers do a good job of supporting it and it can grow and grow.
