Double features at RPM Speedway

 By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (August 11)—Double features were run in four of the five divisions at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, on Saturday evening, August 11, to make up the features from June 30.

The make up features ran first with the IMCA Hobby Stocks first to take the track.  Aaron Gray led the field the first 11 laps of the 15-lap race before the final caution waved for a spinning Garrett Hager.  When the green flag replaced the caution, Aaron Honas passed Gray for the lead, only to be passed himself byTopeka’s Brian Stich the following lap.  Stich held off Honas for his second win at Hays this season, with Ron Wehling, Gray, and Tony Slothower rounding out the top five.

Tracy Holloway of Osborne led all 15 laps in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod race.  Track point leader chased down the polesitter but had to settle for second behind Holloway.  Clay Money finished third, followed by Blaine Walt and Cory McGann.

Pat Bedore led the field the first half of the 15-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, then was passed by Austin Carter of New Cambria.  Carter held off the field through two late caution periods to score his second win at RPMSpeedwayin 2012.  Bedore, Terry Cunningham, Nolan Remus and Shaylon Holloway rounded out the top five.

Oakley’s Troy Plummer took the lead from Brian Calhoon on lap 5 in the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event, but was passed by Rodger Peck on lap 9.  But Plummer got by Peck on lap 15 and held him at bay the remaining few laps to make his way to victory lane.  ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill, David Murray Jr. and ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick completed the top five.

After the heat races were completed, the regular main events then hit the track.

The Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compacts were first up with their 12-lap main event.  Trevor ‘The Hit Man’ Schmidt led all 12 laps to pick up his third win of the season.  State point leader Brandon Lobdell finished second, followed by Art Herzog, Shaun Woods and track point leader Monte Honas.

The Rebel Tank Service IMCA Hobby Stock 15-lap feature saw 23 cars take the green flag.  Daniel Irwin led the first 6 laps, then was passed after a restart by G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ of Tescott.  However the caution waved before the lap was completed and Irwin once again led the field back to green.  Fuller passed Irwin after the restart once again and this time made it stick as he led the remaining laps to score his third Hays win this season.  ‘Bam Bam’ Cody Graham finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Cody Ghumm, Tony Slothower and Kent Tammen.

Chris Heim led the first half of the 15-lap Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature before track point leader Jake Krone took the lead and led the rest of the distance to score his fifth win this season at Hays.  Trenton Kleweno got by Heim for second, with Blaine Walt and Clay Money completing the top five.

The Advantage Glass Plus 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature was a familiar sight with the Tubbs brothers of Colby battling it out for the top spot.  Jason Davis led the first 7 laps before elder brother Jeff Tubbs took control.  But two laps later coming to the halfway point of the race, ‘The Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs took the lead from his brother.  Jeff led again on lap 15, only to have Nick regain the top spot the following lap and hold off his brother for his sixth trip to victory lane at Hays this season.  Terry Cunningham was a close third, followed by Shaylon Holloway and Davis.

Twenty-three cars lined up for the 20-lap Teel’s Trucks IMCA Modified main event with polesitter Tyler Sutton taking the early lead.  But 11th starting Travis Sherfick worked his way through traffic and took control on lap 8 and held on through several caution periods to make his first trip to victory lane this season at Hays.  Geoff Jermark, track point leader David Murray Jr., Rodger Peck and ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick finished second through fifth.

Nex-Tech was the evening’s race sponsor.

Racing returns to Hays on Saturday, August 25, for ‘Cowboy Boots & Daisy Dukes Night’ with prizes awarded for best costumes.  The regular five divisions will race starting at 7:00 p.m.  The school buses also return to action.
